EMISSION INVENTORY CODES (CES CODES) AND DESCRIPTION

  620-616-5400-0000 (47340) Cattle Feedlot Dust

METHOD SUMMARY

This source category provides estimates of the fugitive dust emissions from beef cattle feedlots. A beef cattle feedlot is an area where beef cattle are confined for four to five months for fattening before marketing. Most
feedlot dust is created by cattle movement in the holding pens. Vehicular traffic also creates dust in unpaved
alleyways.

ACTIVITY DATA SOURCE:  Activity data for this source category are based on beef cattle feedlot throughput. This is defined as the number of beef cattle that have been confined in feedlots before marketing. Because individual feedlot throughput data are not readily available, the activity data were estimated from the California Livestock Report and discussions with County Livestock Farm Advisors for each county.

EMISSION FACTOR SOURCE:  The emission factor used to estimate feedlot dust emissions is based on an emission factor from the AP-42 document published by the U.S. EPA. The emission factor reflects dry season conditions at feedlots where dust control measures are not regularly employed. The emission factor is 27 tons of TSP per 1000 head throughput (or 17.2 tons PM10 / 1000 head throughput).

TEMPORAL DATA:  The emissions are currently assumed to be uniform on an annual, weekly, and daily basis.

DATE OF THE LAST UPDATE:  March 1989

GROWTH PARAMETER:  Future projections of cattle feedlot emissions are based on general agricultural production estimates.
