METHOD SUMMARY
This category includes the 1993 estimates of fugitive dust particulate matter resulting from harvesting of cotton, almonds, and walnuts.
ACTIVITY DATA SOURCE: County-specific crop acreage is from the California Department of Food and Agriculture's compilation of harvest acreage. The times of harvesting operations are from agricultural crop calendars developed with the assistance of San Joaquin Valley agricultural experts.
EMISSION FACTOR SOURCE: Harvesting emission factors are from upwind / downwind air monitoring measurements performed by the University of California, Davis, during cotton and almond harvest operations. Because of the similarity in the harvesting methods, it is assumed that the emission factor for walnut harvesting is the same as the factor for almond harvest.
TEMPORAL DATA: Activity occurs predominantly during the daylight hours. Harvesting activity is assumed to be equally likely any day of the week. The monthly activity profiles vary by county and are based on when the crops are harvested. For cotton, almonds, and walnuts, the harvest occurs in the Fall months only. Refer to Appendix A for details on how the monthly profiles were developed.
DATE OF THE LAST UPDATE: August 1997
GROWTH PARAMETER: Growth based on agricultural crop acreage or agricultural production. Set to zero for many regions.
