EMISSION INVENTORY SOURCE CATEGORY

METHOD SUMMARY

These categories are used to inventory 1987 hydrocarbon emissions associated with loading crude oil, residual oil, gasoline, and jet fuel into marine tankers and gasoline into barges. Emissions results from the displacement of vapors (in the tank before loading plus generated as new product loaded) in the cargo tanks when they are loaded with the petroleum products.

ACTIVITY DATA SOURCE:

1. Obtained amounts (tons) of crude oil, gasoline, jet fuel, and residual oil shipped off from California ports in 1986 from "Waterborne Commerce of the United States, Calendar Year 1986" Part 4, United States Army Corps of Engineers, 1986.

2. Converted tons to gallons using density data from Stone & Webster's "Relative Energy Data."

3. Updated 1986 activity to 1987 by multiplying by ratios developed from data from the California Energy Commission: "Quarterly Oil Report - Second Quarter 1987," "Quarterly Oil Report - Second Quarter 1988," and "California Petroleum Product Shipments of Major Marketers by Transportation Method," 1989.

EMISSION FACTOR SOURCE:

• Crude oil loading into tankers, emission factor was obtained from "Hydrocarbon Emissions During Marine Loading of Crude Oils," Western Oil and Gas Association, 1977.

• Gasoline loading into tankers and barges and jet fuel into tankers emission factors were obtained from "Report to the Legislature on Air Pollutant Emissions from Marine Vessels," ARB, 1984.

• Residual oil loading into tankers emission factor was obtained from "Inventory of Emissions from Marine Operations within California Coastal Waters, Preliminary Draft" Scott Environmental Technology, Inc., 1980.

TEMPORAL DATA:

The annual, weekly, and daily activities are uniform throughout the year, seven days a week, and twenty-four hours a day.
