Notes from January 9, 2001 Meeting

The Meteorological Criteria Working Group held a second meeting on January 9, 2001 at the Imperial County Air Pollution Control District (ICAPCD) in El Centro, CA. Representatives from South Coast, San Diego and Salton Sea Air Basins as well as ARB meteorology staff were present for this meeting.

The ICAPCD supplied a draft of the Imperial County Smoke Management Program for review. Last year, the Imperial County APCD wanted the freedom to make basin burn/ no burn day decisions on their own. In a summer test of slightly different decision criteria, the district's decision continued to be more limiting than the ARB basin decision. The district has decided not to pursue making the basin burn decision at this time as they continue testing their program and gaining experience with the modified criteria. This approach seemed reasonable to all those in attendance.

San Diego County APCD has had some problems with marginal burn day calls for eastern San Diego County. However, they have been resolved and no apparent problems remain at this time.

South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) will evaluate some data on southeast wind days for the Salton Sea Air Basin, but no problems have been raised.

The next meeting will convene later this month to review each district's smoke management program and to decide which meteorological criteria need to be updated to acquire a better program.
