Aircraft Particulate Emissions

Dr. Chowen Wey will provide an introduction to the fundamental scientific understanding of jet aircraft particulate matter (PM) emissions, starting with a characterization of the types of volatile and non-volatile PM emitted from modern turbofan engines used in commercial, civil, and military aircraft. She will briefly discuss local air quality impacts as well as impacts of jet aircraft PM on the global climate. Key questions to be discussed will include what impacts are most important (local air quality, human health, or climate change) and what parameters are most important when it comes to assessing the impacts of aircraft PM emissions.

Challenges in sampling PM emissions from jet aircraft engines will be addressed, leading to efforts currently underway under the auspices of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) to develop aerospace recommended practices for sampling jet aircraft PM emissions. The Defense Department's need to measure PM mass from the Joint Strike Fighter's engines has accelerated research to measure PM from commercial engines. NASA's Aviation Particle Experiment (APEX) projects will be described, including the 2004 test program conducted at NASA Dryden Research Center in California. Some preliminary representative data will be presented from this project.

The roles of NASA, FAA, and ICAO and the National Aviation PM Road map will be discussed. The PM Road map will prepare a report that will be used by Congress to determine what level of future funding is needed to address jet aircraft PM emissions.

Speaker Biography

Dr. Chowen Wey is program manager for aircraft particulate emissions research at NASA's John H. Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio, where she has managed a wide variety of aircraft-related research projects during her nineteen years at the Center.

Chowen earned her Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science from the Georgia Institute of Technology and describes herself as a scientist by education and an engineer by work experience. At NASA she has had broad experience in propulsion - related fluid dynamics, materials endurance, and combustor and engine testing to characterize jet aircraft engine emissions.

Chowen initiated NASA Glenn's aviation particulate emissions research efforts and currently manages the program in jet engine particulate emissions and their atmospheric impacts, including local air quality and global climate change. She is also NASA Glenn's senior liaison to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). ICAO is an international organization that establishes jet engine emission standards that apply to the entire worldwide commercial aircraft fleet.

Chowen is in Northern California to participate in a collaborative research project with ARB, NASA, FAA, and EPA to collect and analyze particulate and air toxic emissions from commercial jet aircraft engines.
