Staff Air Pollution Specialist

ECCD

The Emissions Certification and Compliance Division is recruiting for a Staff Air Pollution Specialist vacancy in the On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) Branch, which implements OBD system requirements for all light-duty, medium-duty, and heavy-duty on-road vehicles. The activities of the OBD program involve detailed understanding and analyses of current and future emission control technologies on vehicles to ensure comprehensive monitoring of emission-related malfunctions; as such, the OBD program is evolving to ensure OBD systems keep pace as vehicle technologies change to meet the increasing challenges to achieve lower emissions and higher efficiencies. Under the direction of the Section Manager, the SAPS will lead various activities of the OBD Program Development Section, which has primarily responsible for developing light-, medium-, and heavy-duty OBD regulations and guidance documents. The section is also responsible for coordination with internal and external stakeholders on OBD program integration and regulatory development, consultation on OBD certification and enforcement issues, and participation in other OBD program-related activities (e.g., liaison to standards committees, incorporation of OBD features in inspection and maintenance programs, and OBD program training). The successful candidate will lead the work of professional engineering and technical staff performing the duties assigned by the Section Manager related to the program areas discussed above.

This is a good position for candidates looking to lead significant projects, gain technical and analytical experience, and have an influence on the science and analysis behind environmental policy. Our work includes developing a deep understanding of major freight, transportation, and off-road industries, and translating that into analysis used as the basis for regulatory developments, State Implementation Plans, Scoping Plan, and new efforts such as community inventories. The LCFS is a key regulation achieving greenhouse gas emission reductions in the transportation sector. Air Resources Technician I

We are currently looking for an individual to help with the Air Resources Board Equipment Registration program (ARBER) and other projects within the section. The ARBER Team is primarily responsible for the implementation of the Transport Refrigeration Unit and the Drayage Truck regulations, which involves a variety of challenging tasks, including assisting stakeholders in navigating complex emissions reduction requirements. The successful candidate will provide customer service and technical support to the section. The position also requires frequent communication with stakeholders via phone and email. Air Resources Technician II

The Air Quality and Climate Science Section (Section) in the Atmospheric Science and Climate Strategies Branch, Research Division is tasked to advance our understanding of emerging atmospheric science, implement climate change mitigation regulations, and lead research efforts in climate science, GHG inventory, and air quality analyses to inform policy direction and support the health-protection mission of the agency. The section is seeking a highly motivated individual to join the team in air quality research to support CARB's emission reduction strategies (e.g., State Implementation Plan). Under general supervision, this incumbent has responsibility for assessment of air quality impacts and conduct of statistical analyses for criteria pollutants (e.g., ozone, PM2.5, and their precursors) and toxic air contaminants. This includes assessing the data post-processing, data quality assurance, reviewing ambient and emission inventory data, and conducting spatial and temporal analyses of these pollutants on large air quality and emission datasets using tools such as GIS, Python, MATLAB, Visual Basic, IGOR, R, or other programming skills.
