Editor's Note: ARB Demonstrates First Natural Gas Powered "Clean Air" School Bus

        SACRAMENTO - Officials from the California Air Resources Board (ARB), Southern California Gas and Tecogen Inc., will unveil the first compressed natural gas-powered "clean air" school bus certified for use in California during a press conference at Dorris Place Elementary School, in downtown Los Angeles on April 9 at 11:00 a.m.

        Dorris Place Elementary is located at 2225 Dorris Place, Los Angeles, Thomas Bros. Map coordinates page 35, section E-4. To attend the press conference, take the Golden State Freeway and exit at Stadium Way, bear right to Riverside Drive and continue on Riverside Drive approximately one-half mile to the school on the corner of Dorris Place and Riverside. Parking is available.

        This is the ARB's first certification of an alternative fueled engine, making it the state's first mass-produced CNG powered engine.

        Available for interview and photo opportunities will be James D. Boyd, ARB executive officer; Dr. Ravinder K. Sakhuja, CEO of Tecogen Inc., the engine builder; and, Richard D. Farman, Chairman of Southern California Gas Company.

        Also scheduled is a demonstration of the clean running natural gas engine, including a "white handkerchief" test as proof of its soot-free exhaust.

        The school bus is the first of ten to be distributed to three California school districts for operation in September 1991.

        The Air Resources Board is a department of the California Environmental Protection Agency. ARB's mission is to promote and protect public health, welfare, and ecological resources through effective reduction of air pollutants while recognizing and considering effects on the economy. The ARB oversees all air pollution control efforts in California to attain and maintain health based air quality standards.
