Ore.-based nonprofit that backs conservation projects with an eye
to accelerating carbon mitigation has inked a $5.5 million
contract with the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. The

AIR POLLUTION

EPA retreats on Texas regional haze plan. U.S. EPA, headed toward
a likely court defeat and unable to reach a deal with opponents,
is offering to pull the plug on a Texas cleanup plan intended to
improve visibility in two major national parks by requiring new
pollution controls on coal-fired power plants. In a filing late
yesterday with the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, agency
lawyers said they would…

CLIMATE CHANGE

More company climate votes ahead, as Trump may loosen energy
rules. Activist shareholders plan a record number of resolutions
focused on climate change at U.S. company annual meetings in
2017; even as President-elect Donald Trump looks set to loosen
environmental regulations. Based on filings so far, U.S.
companies are on track to face roughly 200 resolutions on climate
matters…

Climate change deepens Thailand's fish crisis. Years of
overfishing in Thailand take their toll, threatening a
multi-billion dollar industry. The government is working hard to
bring the fish back with a whole new raft of regulations. But as
Eve Johnson reports there's another big culprit that they're
ignoring: global warming.

New Zealand to Save $31 Billion by Using Paris Carbon Market.
New Zealand is seeking to offset its global warming emissions by
investing almost $5 billion in green projects overseas, saving
six times that figure to meet its Paris climate commitments.
Climate Minister Paula Bennett sounded out countries willing to
sell emission-reduction credits as she met them at the United

Earth Isn’t Doomed Yet. The Climate Could Survive Trump Policies.
Is the battle to contain global warming now lost? With the
election of Donald Trump, it certainly looked that way to many of
the shellshocked diplomats gathered in Morocco earlier this month
at the first climate summit following the breakthrough agreement
in Paris last year to contain greenhouse gas emissions.

A Wrenching Choice for Alaska Towns in the Path of Climate
Change. In the dream, a storm came and Betsy Bekoalok watched the
river rise on one side of the village and the ocean on the other,
the water swallowing up the brightly colored houses, the fishing
boats and the four-wheelers, the school and the clinic. She dived
into the floodwaters, frantically searching for her son.

Trump seems ready to fight the world on climate change. But he's
likely to meet resistance. Donald Trump is branded with all
manner of unflattering labels, but one that hasn’t seemed to much
bother him is “climate pariah.” The president-elect is unabashed
in his disdain for America’s global warming policy. He has placed
a staunch climate-change doubter and antagonist of mainstream
science in charge of reshaping…

Trump rollback of Obama climate agenda may prove challenging.
Donald Trump plans to dismantle President Barack Obama's efforts
to reduce planet-warming carbon emissions. But delivering on his
campaign pledges to abolish the Environmental Protection Agency
and bring back tens of thousands of long-gone coal mining jobs
could prove far more difficult.

Sierra snowpack could drop 50% by the end of the century due to
climate change. The all-important Sierra Nevada snowpack could be
cut in half by the end of the century if greenhouse gas emissions
aren't reduced, according to a new analysis from UCLA.
Researcher Alex Hall used a complex computer model to look at
what would happen to the Sierra Nevada mountains if these
pollutants kept entering our atmosphere at the current rate.

Svalbard above freezing? 'Shocking' temps have huge consequences.
Once-frozen Svalbard may soon see liquid water where ice sheets
reigned, as the average annual temperature for 2016 could be
above 32 degrees Fahrenheit. The Arctic archipelago of Svalbard
has seen such extreme warmth this year that the average annual
temperature could end up above freezing for the first time on
record, scientists said Friday.

DROUGHT

Wettest start in 30 years to rainy season in Northern California,
but don’t forget the drought. It’s only a beginning. But it’s a

hope to a state enduring its fifth year of drought. The National
Weather Service said Monday that the rainy season in the northern
Sierra Nevada is off to its wettest start in 30 years.

U.S. says biofuels program not expected to meet targeted
emissions cuts. The U.S. biofuels program, designed to boost
demand for renewables in gasoline and diesel, is unlikely to meet
its targets for cutting greenhouse gas emissions, the government
said in two reports on Monday. The Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS),
the more than decade-old biofuels policy, is unlikely to meet
targeted cuts to emissions by 2022 as production of
second-generation renewable fuels lags…

Electric cars to get big boost from emissions rules on engines:

majority of established automakers to get serious about electric
cars. But while automakers build more electric cars to meet

Trump can't stop reduction in carbon pollution from coal plants |
Opinion. A new report has come out stating the electric sector
has already met its 2024 goal in the Clean Power Plan for cutting
carbon emissions. In addition, the sector has reached its 2030
target for reducing coal use. This is a good sign because the
Supreme Court has stayed the Obama Administration's historic plan

Biofuels Turn Out To Be a Climate Mistake. A detailed study shows
that biofuels are not carbon-neutral, and in fact result in
increased atmospheric carbon dioxide. Corn and soybeans are two
of the most widely planted crops in the U.S. and the main
feedstocks for making biofuels. Ever since the 1973 oil embargo,
U.S. energy policy has sought to replace petroleum-based
transportation fuels with alternatives.
