Wash. carbon tax goes down in flames. Voters in Washington state
rejected a proposal to implement America's first carbon tax by a
wide margin on Election Day, in a stinging rebuke to climate
hawks seeking a breakthrough in one of the country's most
environmentally conscious states. The result left carbon-tax

AIR POLLUTION

Smog Chokes Delhi, Leaving Residents. ‘Cowering by Our Air
Purifiers’. Levels of the most dangerous particles soared over
the weekend in some places to more than 16 times the limit
India’s government considers safe. For days, many in Delhi have
been living as if under siege, trying to keep the dirty air away
from their children and older parents. But it is not easy: Open a
window or a door…

How China's horrific air quality magically turns cleaner: cotton.
China is known for having some of the most polluted air in the
world. But officials in one Chinese city found a way to at least
make that air appear cleaner, for awhile. Like many Chinese
cities, Xi'an, the provincial capital of Shaanxi, in the northern
part of the country, has air-monitoring equipment.

Trump’s victory shocks international climate negotiations. The
surprise election of Donald J. Trump to the presidency of the
United States Tuesday night didn’t just stun global markets. It
also hurled doubt into international climate change negotiations
currently underway in Marrakech, Morocco this week, as
participants contemplated vows by Trump, a climate change
doubter, to “cancel” the Paris climate agreement that had brought
them together.

Change Ahead: Shifts on Immigration, Climate, Health and Taxes.
The stunning election of Donald J. Trump as president and the
re-election of a Republican-controlled House and Senate will
usher in sweeping change to the nation’s policy course that will
most likely amount to a repudiation of much of President Obama’s
legacy and will reorient the United States’ position on the world
stage.

The Paris climate deal just became law. Now countries must figure
out how to make good on their pledges. The landmark climate
accord reached in Paris in December was ratified with uncommon
speed, entering into force last week after it was approved by
countries accounting for nearly two-thirds of planet-warming
emissions.

Climate change: Nations will push ahead with plans despite Trump.
At UN climate talks in Morocco, countries say they are prepared
to move ahead without the US. President-elect Trump has said that
he will "cancel" the Paris Climate Agreement within 100 days of

would seriously damage the credibility of the US.

irrefutable signs it's real. President-elect Donald Trump does
not believe that climate change is real, despite overwhelming

emissions, ramp up fossil-fuel production as a vehicle for job
growth, and restart the Keystone XL oil pipeline process.

Donald Trump Victory Casts Shadow Over US Pledge to International
Climate Change Goals. Donald Trump's ascendance as
president-elect of the United States has caused many
environmentalists and world leaders to raise concerns over the
future president's stance on climate change -- a global issue he
has called a "hoax." Trump vowed in a speech at a petroleum

A 'sea change' for power-sector climate action? With Donald
Trump in the White House and Republicans controlling both
chambers of Congress and the Supreme Court, all expectations for
U.S. climate action flipped last night. Just days ago, some
environmental advocates were optimistic a President Hillary
Clinton could eventually consider an ambitious cap-and-trade
program or a carbon tax.

Global oil demand could peak by 2020, says Shell. The rise of
electric cars has led many analysts to make predictions about the
future of the oil industry. ExxonMobil and OPEC have both made
statements indicating confidence that the majority of vehicles on
the world's roads will continue to be powered by fossil fuels for
the next few decades.
But Shell recently made a prediction that is a bit less
confident.

Green Elites Face Trump Threat. A chance to clean up rampant
cronyism in the energy sector won’t soon return. Whatever you
think of Donald Trump, his candidacy represents an important
opportunity. It’s a chance to dismiss a very particular elite
about whom it could be said, borrowing from Cromwell, “For any
good you have been doing . . . in the name of God, go!”

Choking in New Delhi. It is no longer safe to breathe in New
Delhi, one of the most polluted cities in the world. The problem
has grown steadily worse, but little has been done beyond stopgap
measures like allowing cars with odd- or even-numbered license
plates to be used only on alternate days. The city’s high levels
of fine particles — the most deadly because they penetrate more
deeply into the lungs…

Challenges of global climate pact, 1 year after. Now comes the

critical factor: how the next president approaches the issue.

The Guardian view on air pollution: ministers must act.
Editorial. Adults who grew up in less polluted days can cope
with pollution. But when a child’s lungs are damaged, they are
damaged for life. On Sunday, the capital city of one of the
world’s fastest growing economies was effectively shut down in an
emergency act. The reason was not terrorism, but air pollution.

The economic consequences of Donald Trump. FROM late January,
Donald Trump will have all the authority of the American
executive, and the support of a unified Republican Congress,

profound and lasting change. The near-term economic effect of a

racial and religious minorities in America, or to nervous NATO
allies in Eastern Europe.
