CLIMATE CHANGE

Sensing opportunity, cities seek business backing for climate
change efforts. Cities around the world, including in developing
nations, are increasingly grasping the economic opportunities
generated by the need to tackle climate change and are pursuing
concrete partnerships with business, a climate research group
said.

Insured crabs, tea help China's farmers avoid extreme weather
losses. Ma Rongda, a tea grower for nearly 30 years, knows how
badly his business can be affected by extreme weather. But when
heavy snow and cold hit his tea garden earlier this year, Ma was
not as worried as he used to be. “I bought insurance for my tea
plantations,” he explained. For an annual premium of some 7,000
yuan (815 pounds)…

cities reporting on their efforts to tackle global warming has
jumped 70 percent to 533 across 89 countries since a new climate
change agreement was adopted late last year, according to the

With EU backing, Paris climate deal clears last hurdle to taking
effect. The European Parliament approved the Paris accord to
fight climate change on Tuesday, tipping it over the threshold
needed for the global deal to enter into force, in what U.N.
chief Ban Ki-moon hailed as an historic vote. The Paris Agreement
reached by nearly 200 nations nearly one year ago will help guide
a radical shift of the world economy…

Hurricanes will worsen as planet warms and sea levels rise,
scientists warn. Some say Hurricane Matthew, which slammed Haiti
and is headed towards the US, is the sort of fierce lashing that
will be more common due to climate change. Major storms such as
Hurricane Matthew, which has slammed into Haiti and is now headed
towards the US, will grow in menace as the world warms and sea
levels rise, scientists have warned.

Climate change deal is a turning point for world, Obama says.
History may judge today as a turning point for the planet in the
fight against climate change, President Obama said Wednesday, as
the United Nations reached a key threshold triggering the
implementation of the Paris climate agreement. With nations
representing more than 55% of world carbon emissions now having
signed on to the agreement…

Disappearing Yosemite glacier becomes symbol of climate change.
When naturalist John Muir explored Lyell Glacier in Yosemite
National Park about 150 years ago, the river of ice stretched as
far as 10 football fields between the peaks of the Lyell Canyon,
a glacier one might expect to see in Alaska, not California.
Today, it’s a sliver of the natural feature Muir called a “living
glacier.”

climate change. Changing weather patterns are having a dramatic
effect on the livelihoods of smallholders in the developing
world. So what can be done? Coffee farmers in Peru suffered heavy
losses in 2013 when 40% of the country’s coffee plantations were
adversely affected by coffee leaf rust. The disease, which

GHGs from power plants, industrial sites fell in 2015. A
decrease in greenhouse gas emissions from power plants drove an
overall decline in emissions from industrial facilities in 2015,
according to new data released by U.S. EPA. Large stationary
sources in the power, oil and gas production, refining, iron and
steel mill, and landfill sectors reported an overall decline in
greenhouse gases of 4.9 percent from 2014.

Past climate, not current changes, key to some mammal
communities. There's plenty of research into the predicted effect
of climate change on the world's animal populations, but a group
of researchers from Arizona State University have tried to turn
this thought process on its head. Their premise was simple: What
sort of effects have changing climates had on animal populations
in the past?

Hansen study finds meeting Paris Agreement could cost trillions.
The world is now hotter than it's been in 115,000 years, and
reversing this trend could be a costly operation. According to a
study from a 12-member team of researchers, including former NASA
scientist James Hansen, the temperature in 2016 will probably be
1.25 degrees Celsius more than average temperatures during
preindustrial times.

Legal experts: Climate case won't turn on constitutional
questions. The constitutionality of the Clean Power Plan tends to
generate headlines and hot takes. But another matter is more
likely to prove decisive in the fight over President Obama's
signature environmental law: the extent of U.S. EPA's
carbon-cutting authority. That conclusion, delivered by a panel
of legal experts…

DROUGHT

Official: California water conservation slipping. Water
conservation continues to slip in drought-stricken California
after officials lifted mandatory cutbacks, officials said ahead
of formally releasing the figures on Wednesday. The State Water
Resources Control Board in Sacramento is expected reveal the
amount of water Californian's saved statewide in August. "We're
concerned that conservation levels are continuing to drop off as
we enter a sixth year of exceptional drought…

Another Environmental Epic Fail. As everyone who follows the
dreary world of environmental politics knows, the great concern
these days is with “environmental justice,” which is exactly what
you think it is—an attempted fusing of the Edmund Pettis Bridge
with the Cuyahoga River fire. So it is with a great deal of
amusement that I see a new report from USC, UC Berkeley and
Occidental College casts doubt on the…
