CAP AND TRADE

An oil industry lobbyist wrote the request to audit the state's
main climate change agency When Assemblyman Adam Gray (D-Merced)
renewed his request this month to audit the state agency in
charge of spending billions of dollars generated from
California’s primary climate change program, he knew what the
response from his opponents would be.

Legal Doubts Over California’s Cap-and-Trade Program
The opinion of lawyers working for California’s lawmakers became
clear in the spring. Without new laws, the state’s prominent
cap-and-trade program would be dead after 2020.Such a legal
reality could put an end to the pollution reduction program, and
with it billions in anticipated revenues and some of the Golden
State’s vaunted global leadership on climate action.

CLIMATE CHANGE

Louisiana floods: Is this what climate change looks like?
A flood like the one that ravaged Louisiana over the past few
days has a 0.2 percent chance of occurring any given year and
should only occur once every 500 to 1,000 years, according to
scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
(NOAA).

The climate change brigade are wrong again
A few weeks of not abnormally warm summer weather have prompted
light-headed journalists to report not only that this could be
the “hottest August for years” and “the hottest year on record”
but that, thanks to climate change, we can, within 30 years,
expect “killer heatwaves” to become “the norm”.

How climate change will determine where the Olympic Games are
held
Global warming may severely limit the potential host cities for
Olympic Summer Games in the next 50 years. Rising temperatures
and humidity caused by climate change will make it increasingly
difficult to find cities eligible to host the Olympics Summer
Games, according to a new study encompassing the broader
implications of climate change on the Olympics.

DROUGHT

Drought's on, but mandatory cuts off for most in California

warn that California is in severe drought, but Californians this
summer are getting a second chance to show whether they can save
water without the state ordering them.

VEHICLES

Tesla isn't alone with cars that can nearly drive themselves
With all the attention paid to Tesla Motors' Autopilot system,
you'd think the company was the only one making cars that can
almost drive themselves. But many automakers have rolled out cars
that do what Teslas do.

VW RECALL

Oversight of $2 billion VW electric-car funds required, charging
companies say
As part of a preliminary settlement over its use illegal "defeat

OPINIONS

When climate change becomes the new terrorism
I don’t know if anyone has noticed this recently, but it’s hot
outside. “Unseasonably warm” Augusts are nothing new – as John
Sebastian reminded us back in 1966* when he sang about the “hot
town…summer in the city.”

Mercury News editorial: California EV program needs a tuneup
Californians can take pride in the state's leadership role in
encouraging electric vehicles. Once a rarity, EVs are a common
sight in the Bay Area. More than half of the some 400,000
electric vehicles in the United States operate in California.

Air pollution's true costs
Paris-Air pollution takes years off people’s lives. It causes
substantial pain and suffering, among adults and children alike.
And it damages food production, at a time when we need to feed
more people than ever. This is not just an economic issue; it is
a moral one.

Are We Feeling Collective Grief Over Climate Change?
The idea is highly controversial, but at least one psychiatrist
is convinced that we are, whether we know it or not, in 1977, I
was in middle school in Michigan, and a science teacher shared a
tidbit off-curriculum. Some scientists had postulated that as a
result of "pollution," heat-trapping gasses might one day lead to
a warming planet.
