CAP AND TRADE

EPA Moves to Regulate Climate-Warming Airliner Pollution. The
government has found that jet engine exhaust is adding to climate
change and endangering human health, and needs to be regulated.
The Environmental Protection Agency announced Monday that it will
use its authority under the Clean Air Act to impose limits on
aircraft emissions. Jet engines spew significant amounts of
greenhouse gases…

Next Item on Obama’s Climate Agenda: Airplane Pollution. The
Obama administration on Monday announced its plan to start
regulating planet-warming pollution from airplanes, setting off a
battle between environmentalists and the airline industry. The
plan to curb airplane emissions comes as President Obama looks to
strengthen his climate change legacy with new policies in the
waning months of his administration.

Cap-and-trade market could raise pressure on dairies, jet makers
and refineries.
California companies that refine gas, make cheese and build
satellites may face bigger bills in the state’s underperforming
cap-and-trade market very soon. But their counterparts that
extract oil from the earth, turn wood into paper or produce
fertilizer are in line for a longer cap-and-trade honeymoon.

AIR POLLUTION

Out-of-control wildfire grows to more than 33,000 acres in Santa
Clarita Valley.
The brush fire raging in the rugged mountains of the Santa
Clarita Valley grew by more than 10,000 acres on Sunday,
scorching an estimated 33,172 acres by the late evening as the
blaze continued to threaten hundreds of homes while firefighters
battled to keep flames from spreading, authorities said. Fueled
by 20-mph winds…

Monterey Wildfire Smoke Prompts Spare The Air Alert Tuesday. The
10th Spare the Air alert of the summer season has been declared
for Tuesday in the Bay Area because of unhealthy ozone
accumulation, regional air quality officials said. The Bay Area
Air Quality Management District issued the alert as a result of
persistent hot temperatures…

Air Quality Advisory Issued in Vegas Due to California Fire.
Officials are blaming poor air quality and smoky skies in Las
Vegas on wildfires in California, including a massive blaze in
the Angeles National Forest just north of Los Angeles. The Clark
County Department of Air Quality issued an advisory Monday that
remains in effect through Tuesday for potentially elevated levels
of ozone and smoke in southern Nevada.

Heat, smoke affecting air quality. A hot spell cranking up as the
week progresses combined with smoke in the air from a more than
10,000-acre wildfire burning in Monterey County has made for
unhealthy air quality in South County, according to National
Weather Service meteorologist Drew Peterson.

CLIMATE CHANGE

A Sequel to the Paris Climate Accord Takes Shape in Vienna. When
negotiators from nearly 200 countries gathered outside Paris in
December for the United Nations summit meeting on climate change,
they reached the first agreement to take action on curbing their
planet-warming pollution. This weekend in Vienna, with far less
attention, negotiators from those same countries neared a deal…

China's coal peak hailed as turning point in climate change
battle. The global battle against climate change has passed a
historic turning point with China’s huge coal burning finally
having peaked, according to senior economists. They say the
moment may well be a significant milestone in the course of the
Anthropocene, the current era in which human activity dominates
the world’s environment.

FUELS/REFINERY

Dems look to relegate fossil fuels to the past. The proposed
Democratic platform that the party will vote on during its
convention in Philadelphia this week is chock full of things one
might expect. Battling climate change. Raising the minimum wage.
Equal pay for women and minorities. Equal rights for the gay,
lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.

Proposed Calif. methane regs rankle producers. Oil and gas
companies are worried about pending regulations to reduce methane
from their operations in California. The draft regulations, which
the California Air Resources Board (ARB) released at the end of
May and aired at a Sacramento hearing last week, envision rules
for monitoring, repairing leaks and capturing vapor from
facilities that produce…

VEHICLES

Audi To Introduce Three Electric Car Models by 2020. The
electric car industry seems to be catching everyone’s attention
and interest. It comes as no surprise that Audi too, has decided
to dip its toes in it. The company came under the lime light as
it unveiled its plan to introduce three electric vehicles (EVs)
by 2020. The automobile manufacturer, which has been to slow to
embrace the autonomous vehicles…

Hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle landscape truly changed, says longtime
expert. Hydrogen fuel-cell cars are currently available to
consumers, but only in small numbers. The Hyundai Tucson and
Toyota Mirai are on sale in certain regions of California, and
will soon be joined by the 2017 Honda Clarity Fuel Cell. The
three manufacturers only plan to sell very small volumes of
fuel-cell cars over the next few years…

US car sharing service kept 28,000 private cars off the road in 3
years. A new study shows one-way car sharing services can
significantly reduce the number of cars on the road and cut
greenhouse gas emissions.

VW RECALL

U.S. Regulator: VW Must Help Clean Up. The California Air
Resources Board, is Volkswagen’s nemesis. It was technicians at
the Air Resources Board’s lab that discovered the defeat devices
Volkswagen had installed in some of its diesel engines to
manipulate emissions data. Last month, the German car maker
announced a settlement with US authorities worth up to $15
billion.

MISCELLANEOUS

A dream comes true: Boy to pick up garbage in Sacramento. This is
what little Ethan Dean’s typical day looks like. He spends 10 to
15 minutes in the morning breathing in mist from a machine called
a nebulizer. Then he puts on a mechanical vest for 20 minutes
that shakes his chest, trying to break up mucus in his lungs.
When he eats, he takes enzymes to help him digest his food.

OPINIONS

A Coolant That Threatens to Heat Up the Climate. GASES found in
air-conditioners, refrigerators and aerosols are among the
biggest threats to our climate. Pound for pound, these
hydrofluorocarbons, or HFCs, can be vastly more powerful for
planetary warming than carbon dioxide. World leaders are in
Vienna to discuss these pollutants and should agree on a plan to
quickly replace them with safer alternatives.

How Tim Kaine helped persuade Virginians — and conservatives — to
act on climate change. Donald Trump’s running mate, Mike Pence,
questions climate change just like Trump himself does. By
contrast, a peek into the recent past of Hillary Clinton’s
running mate, Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia, suggests he takes the
issue seriously and has paid particular attention to how it is
affecting his constituents in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia…

When it comes to water, we need all the data we can get. In many
cases, more truly is better. In California, especially as the
current punishing drought continues for a fifth year, more
definitely would be better in just about every regard when it
comes to water. This is true when it comes to water research.

Climate Change And The Complexity of Science. One of the most
successful environmental treaties of all time was the Montreal
Protocol of 1987, which banned the use of chlorofluorocarbons, or
CFCs, an ozone-depleting substance mainly used in refrigeration
and air conditioning. The ban was made feasible by the
development of new refrigerants that would not deplete the ozone
layer.
