CAP AND TRADE

Trudeau Commits to Carbon Price Amid Provincial Opposition. Prime
Minister Justin Trudeau is pledging to set a national carbon
price to cut emissions, a key message sent as Canada’s provincial
premiers meet to discuss how to proceed. Trudeau and the premiers
fell short of a commitment to impose a price earlier this year,
instead pledging to study a plan that could include “carbon
pricing mechanisms…

Beyond Cap-and-Trade: Many Environmentalists Say California Will
Improve Climate Policy If It Reduces Emissions at Source. Gov.
Jerry Brown has so far been unable to muster two-thirds of state
legislators to vote to extend the program beyond its current 2020
expiration. California's cap-and-trade program is a cornerstone
of the state's effort to curb greenhouse gases. But it's also in
crisis.

California Democrats Seek Support to Extend Trading Program.
California's Democratic leadership is rallying climate policy
supporters to press lawmakers for legislation extending the
state's carbon trading program beyond 2020. At a recent event in
Sacramento, State Senate President Pro Tem Kevin De León (D)
urged clean energy businesses and workers to help push for a bill
that ensures the cap-and-trade program...

AIR POLLUTION

Indian capital to cancel registrations of diesel cars 10 years or
older, immediately. India's top environmental court is taking
aggressive action to curb air pollution in the country's capital
city. New Delhi authorities were ordered by the courts on Monday
to cancel the registrations of diesel cars produced 10 or more
years ago. The order from the New Green Tribunal (NGT) takes
effect immediately.

ALISO CANYON

Last of the Porter Ranch residents back home. Thousands forced
out after Aliso Canyon natural gas leak. The CEO of Southern
California Gas Co. said Tuesday the last of the residents who
were forced from their homes in the Porter Ranch neighborhood in
Los Angeles County by the massive natural gas leak at Aliso
Canyon have returned. “The relocation program that went on for
quite a while has ended,” …

CLIMATE CHANGE

Trees Can Limit Climate Change—Unless It Kills Them First. Here’s
how forests could turn into a source of the very carbon we’re
counting on them to absorb. Forests could actually turn into a
source of CO2, according to a study that paired climate forecasts
with an analysis of records on more than two million trees across
North America. Scientists have considered forests a potential
barrier to climate change…

North American forests not the climate change remedy hoped for –
study. North American forests will not fight climate change by
absorbing carbon dioxide at levels once hoped for because the
trees may not grow big enough, a study said on Wednesday. The new
research challenges previous studies that said trees could grow
larger due to higher temperatures brought on by global warming,
said the authors of the study published in the journal Ecology
Letters.

Too hot to work: global warming to cost $2 trillion in lost
productivity. Rising temperatures caused by climate change may
cost the world economy over $2 trillion in lost productivity by
2030 as hot weather makes it unbearable to work in some parts of
the world, according to U.N. research published on Tuesday. It
showed that in Southeast Asia alone, up to 20 percent of annual
work hours…

After warming fast, part of Antarctica gets a chill: study. The
Antarctic Peninsula, among the fastest warming places on Earth
last century, has since cooled due to natural swings in the local
climate, scientists said on Wednesday, adding that the respite
from the thaw is likely to be brief. Rapid warming until the late
1990s on the peninsula, which snakes up toward South America…

Fighting Obama’s Climate Plan, but Quietly Preparing to Comply.
Matt Mead, the governor of Wyoming, the nation’s leading
coal-producing state, fiercely opposes President Obama’s climate
change regulations, which could shutter hundreds of coal plants
and deeply wound his state, one of 27 that are suing to block the
plan. Nevertheless, Mr. Mead, a Republican, has ordered his top
environmental officials…

Climate change in 5 charts. WeatherDB breaks down climate change
into 5 charts and analyzes how the major contributing factors
interact. The year 2015 received the ominous warmest year on
record title, and 2016 is likely to be even hotter. It's becoming
clear that these warmer weather trends are not arbitrary, but
confirmation that climate change is upon us. As global
temperatures rise, climate change is becoming a reality…

A nonprofit group is cloning ancient trees to combat climate
change. At the foot of a giant sequoia in California's Sierra
Nevada, two arborists stepped into harnesses then inched up ropes
more than 20 stories into the dizzying canopy of a tree that
survived thousands of years, enduring drought, wildfire and
disease. There, the arborists clipped off tips of young branches
to be hand-delivered across the country…

hot June, once again bumping up the odds that 2016 will be the
hottest year on record globally, according to data released
Tuesday.

that it is worthy of note…

Philippine president will not honor climate change pact. The
president of the Philippines does not plan to honor commitments

conference in Paris. "You are trying to stifle us ... and tell us
we are limited to this and that. That's stupid. I will not honor
that," President Rodrigo Duterte said.

DIESEL ACTIVITIES

Hear that train a comin’? Metrolink debuts first of cleaner,
quieter trains. The first of 40 new, cleaner-burning diesel
locomotives arrived on the platform of Union Station here earlier
this week, part of Metrolink’s move toward replacing older,
highly polluting trains. The sleek, $7 million locomotive,
manufactured by Electro-Motive Diesel Progress Rail, was
assembled at Progress Rail’s plant in Muncie, Indiana.

The Future of Big Oil? At Shell, It’s Not Oil. The energy giant
is shifting to gas as the industry adapts to climate change. At
Australia’s Curtis Island, you can see Big Oil morphing into Big
Gas. Just off the continent’s rugged northeastern coast lies a
667-acre liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal owned by Royal
Dutch Shell, an engineering feat of staggering complexity. Gas
from more than 2,500 wells travels hundreds of miles by pipeline
to the island, where it’s chilled…

local groundwater.

VW Earnings Rise Amid Recovery From Diesel-Emissions Scandal.
Volkswagen AG’s first-half earnings exceeded market expectations,
sending its shares up the most in three months, as improvements
at its namesake car brand eclipsed concerns about the growing
price tag for the emissions-cheating scandal. Operating profit
before special items rose to 7.5 billion euros ($8.25 billion) in
the first six months of 2016 from 6.99 billion euros a year
earlier, the German carmaker said in a statement.

MISCELLANEOUS

Tobacco and Oil Industries Used Same Researchers to Sway Public.
As early as the 1950s, the groups shared scientists and
publicists to downplay dangers of smoking and climate change.
Organizations worried about climate change have long drawn
comparisons between the petroleum and tobacco industries, arguing
that each has minimized public health damages of its products to
operate unchecked.

OPINIONS

Facts on climate change should be taken seriously. Climate facts
show we must take action now. Thank you for printing articles
“Scripps oceanographer is Navy’s eye in the sky” (June 13) and
“Report: Carbon dioxide likely to hit record” (June 15) advancing
awareness of climate change. The military has long been aware of
the urgency of mitigating climate change. As time passes, world
security will become more difficult to deal with as polar ice
melts and seas rise.
