 AIR POLLUTION

Fairbanks borough air pollution levels worst in US. Data show air
pollution in the Fairbanks North Star Borough remains at the
highest levels in the nation and has failed to show significant
air quality improvement. The borough's North Pole is recording
the nation's highest counts of episodic particulate pollution.
The data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency show the

Climate change is happening on Mars, where an ice age is coming
to an end. By examining swirling patterns left in ice topping the
Red Planet's north pole, scientists using radar data from NASA's
Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter have put together an unprecedented
look into our rusty neighbor's most recent ice age. The findings,
published in the journal Science, offer fresh insight into the
dynamics of the Martian climate…

freezing temperatures in July, a killer frost in August: "The
most gloomy and extraordinary weather ever seen," according to
one Vermont farmer. Two centuries ago, 1816 became the year

Automobile Driving Museum show offers electric-car history
retrospective. The first modern electric cars to go on sale in
large numbers were the Nissan Leaf and first-generation Chevrolet
Volt, both of which arrived in showrooms in December 2010.
But the history of electric cars stretches back much further than
that—more than a century back, in fact.

GREEN ENERGY

Oregon wind energy project held up over impact on grouse. A U.S.
appeals court sided with two environmental groups on Thursday,
ruling that the U.S. Bureau of Land Management failed to
adequately review the potential impact an Oregon wind energy

has shown marked improvement for the second year in a row in what
experts say is a continuing byproduct of the severe drought that

OPINIONS

California’s cap-and-trade carbon emission system may be failing.
California’s much-vaunted cap-and-trade system of reducing
greenhouse gas emissions may be collapsing. This month’s
quarterly auction of carbon dioxide emission allowances, which
was supposed to generate more than a half-billion dollars for
politicians to spend, brought in a paltry $10 million as the Air
Resources Board sold a tiny fraction of the allowances it was
offering.

Air pollution is a real heartbreaker. No, really. Guess what?
Breathing polluted air isn’t just bad for your lungs — it could
be hurting your heart, too. A 10-year study published in The
Lancet this week links living with air pollution to serious heart
disease. While scientists have long associated long-term air
pollution exposure with cardiovascular disease, research had been
limited.

Are Our Renewable Energy Methods Effective? So much weight is put
on us needing to be greener and more efficient with how we
produce our power. Fossil fuels are depleting, the world is
changing and the focus now needs to be on living sustainably. In
steps solar, wind, hydro and a whole host of other renewable
sources, but how effective are they?
