AIR POLLUTION China Curbs Plans for More Coal-Fired Power Plants. Coal-fired power plants have propelled much of China’s economic rise for decades, helping make the nation the world’s biggest emitter of greenhouse gases. Even with economic growth slackening, and other energy sources taking hold, new coal plants have been added. Now Beijing is trying to slow things down. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/26/business/energy-environment/china-coal.html?ref=energy-environment&utm_source=Inside+Climate+News&utm_campaign=826307b098-Today_s_Climate12_10_2014&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_29c928ffb5-826307b098-327747457&_r=0 4 things to look for in EPA's methane rule. U.S. EPA is poised to release a new methane rule that will lay the groundwork for substantially cutting emissions of the potent greenhouse gas across the oil and gas sector. The amended New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) are anticipated as early as this week, according to the Clean Air Task Force, which is closely following the process. http://www.eenews.net/climatewire/2016/04/26/stories/1060036244 NASA to use Spacecraft Orbiting Earth to track Air Pollution. For more than three decades NASA has focused its space-faring skills and science chops CSI-like on an elusive global killer. Later this month, that pursuit takes us to East Asia. In a few years, part way to the moon. We are getting close. Air pollution causes an estimated 152,000 deaths a year across the Americas and more than 2 million deaths in the Western Pacific, according to the United Nations. Some parts of the world have a detailed view of local air quality from ground sensor networks and forecast models that generate public alerts. But for much of the world this type of information and warning are not available. http://www.clarksvilleonline.com/2016/04/26/nasa-use-spacecraft-orbiting-earth-track-air-pollution/ CLIMATE CHANGE What the Eocene epoch tells us about global warming now. By delving into the mysteries of Earth's climate 50 million years ago, scientists hope to understand how our planet may cope with global warming, providing independent insight into today's climate models. Ancient climates can help us understand the dynamics of future climate change, the impacts of global warming… http://www.csmonitor.com/Science/2016/0426/What-the-Eocene-epoch-tells-us-about-global-warming-now How a giant space umbrella could stop global warming. Our rapidly warming world could cause serious problems for civilization in the decades to come. But could a giant space umbrella help cool down our planet? BBC Future investigates. The race to find a solution to a rapidly warming world is one of the most pressing challenges facing our planet. http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20160425-how-a-giant-space-umbrella-could-stop-global-warming Global Warming: Human Factor Sets Record As Unanimous Cause Of Climate Change. A global warming research team has confirmed that 97 percent of climate scientists have agreed that humans are causing climate change and global warming. http://www.scienceworldreport.com/articles/38781/20160426/global-warming-human-factor-sets-record-as-unanimous-cause-of-climate-change.htm ESA launches environmental satellite Sentinel-1B to monitor global warming. The European Space Agency launched a satellite on 25 April to track the progress of global warming, as part of its Copernicus project. The Sentinel-1B joins its identical twin, Sentinel-1A, in orbit to deliver information for various services, from monitoring ice in polar seas to tracking land subsidence, the ESA said. http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/esa-launches-environmental-satellite-sentinel-1b-monitor-global-warming-1556852 Pershing: World moving fast to enact climate pact early. President Obama's lead climate negotiator suggested yesterday that the Paris climate agreement could take effect years earlier than the envisioned start of 2020, following a rush by nations to join the deal, which aspires to stem dramatic temperature increases. http://www.eenews.net/climatewire/2016/04/26/stories/1060036243 VOLKSWAGEN Toyota Cedes Global Sales Lead to VW as Shutdowns Trump Scandal. Toyota Motor Corp.’s global sales declined in the first quarter and fell behind Volkswagen AG’s, as a series of production disruptions threaten the Japanese automaker’s four-year reign atop auto industry sales charts. Worldwide deliveries dropped 2.3 percent to 2.46 million vehicles in the January-to-March period, Toyota spokeswoman Kayo Doi said by phone Tuesday. While contending with its worst crisis in company history, Volkswagen deliveries rose 0.8 percent to 2.5 million. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-04-26/vw-passes-toyota-sales-as-stoppages-put-four-year-reign-at-risk FUELS Biodiesel used in transport is increasing emissions, new study suggests. Biodiesel used in transport is helping to increase Europe’s overall transport emissions by around 4%, according to a new study by environmental group Transport & Environment (T&E). These extra emissions are equivalent to putting around 12 million additional cars on Europe’s roads in 2020, according to T&E. http://biofuels-news.com/display_news/10442/Biodiesel_used_in_transport_is_increasing_emissions__new_study_suggests/ Mitsubishi Motors falsified gas-mileage tests since 1991. Mitsubishi Motors Corp., the Japanese automaker that acknowledged last week it had intentionally lied about fuel economy data for some of its models, said an internal investigation found such tampering dated back to 1991. President Tetsuro Aikawa told reporters Tuesday that the investigation was ongoing, suggesting that more irregularities might be found. "We don't know the whole picture, and we are in the process of trying to determine that," he said at a news conference at the transport ministry. "I feel a great responsibility." Aikawa said so much was unknown that it's uncertain what action the company will take. He said he didn't know why employees resorted to such tactics to make mileage look better. http://www.latimes.com/business/autos/la-fi-hy-mitsubishi-cheating-20160426-story.html World could kick fossil fuel habit in a decade – study. The world could wean itself off fossil fuels in as little as a decade, according to a recent report. Looking at historical shifts from different technologies and fuel sources, Benjamin Sovacool, a professor of energy policy at the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom, sought to figure out how long those changes took and how long future transitions would take. http://www.eenews.net/climatewire/2016/04/26/stories/1060036240 Roof Racks a Drag on Fuel Economy. As you get ready to hit the road this summer, with the kids loaded inside and the bikes strapped to the roof of your car, you may want to stop and consider that the roof rack on your car may be costing you as much as 25 percent more in gas. In the first study of its kind, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) researcher Alan Meier, working with Yuche Chen of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, have estimated the fuel consumption penalty of this popular and fast-growing vehicle add-on. http://newscenter.lbl.gov/2016/04/25/roof-racks-drag-fuel-economy/ VEHICLES Karma Automotive Renames Updated Electric Car, Moves Production to U.S. Maker of the Fisker plug-in hybrid automobile looks to distance itself from failed predecessor. A new study from researchers at the University of Edinburgh and the independent engineering firm INNAS BV has found that, when the (presumed) additional weight of electric vehicles and other factors are considered, PM10 “emissions” from electric vehicles and gas- and diesel-powered vehicles are equal. How serious should these findings be taken? http://cleantechnica.com/2016/04/26/pm10-emissions-high-evs-gasdiesel-cars/ Four new (or updated) electric cars hitting the road in 2017. The four electric car models coming to dealerships next year may change the numbers on what makes are currently selling best. Among battery electric cars on sale in the U.S., only three vehicles have sold more than 10,000 copies since 2010: the Nissan Leaf, Tesla Model S, and BMW i3. http://www.csmonitor.com/Business/In-Gear/2016/0426/Four-new-or-updated-electric-cars-hitting-the-road-in-2017 Tesla fan commercial: electric car rescue from post-apocalyptic landscape. When fans of a particular electric car start creating their own unofficial commercials for the car, it usually means one of two things. Either the existing ads are inconsistent, irritating, and miss the point (first-generation Chevy Volt marketing, ahem), or the auteur is so enamored of the car that he or she wants to sing its praises to the world. http://www.greencarreports.com/news/1103613_tesla-fan-commercial-electric-car-rescue-from-post-apocalyptic-landscape True Zero to be brand for hydrogen fueling stations from First Element Fuel. The startup company First Element Fuel has just completed a network of 15 hydrogen fueling stations in California—and it's got a new brand it'll use to promote them, too. The fuel provided by First Element stations will be marketed under the Tue Zero brand name. The stations are clustered in specific areas of California, including Silicon Valley, the greater Los Angeles Area, and Harris Ranch in the San Joaquin Valley. http://www.greencarreports.com/news/1103608_true-zero-to-be-brand-for-hydrogen-fueling-stations-from-first-element-fuel New cars meeting, beating fuel efficiency targets. A growing number of vehicles are meeting or surpassing federal fuel economy standards, though improvements to cars outpace those to trucks, according to a new analysis by the Consumer Federation of America. The progress means automakers are on track to meet a federal target that doubles fuel efficiency in 2025 from 2012, according to the report. http://www.eenews.net/climatewire/2016/04/26/stories/1060036238 VW RECALL Volkswagen to appeal ruling allowing UAW vote in Tennessee. Volkswagen on Monday announced plans to appeal a National Labor Relations Board ruling that upheld a unionization vote among a portion of workers at the German automaker's lone U.S. assembly plant in Tennessee. The United Auto Workers union criticized the move as a "stall tactic that won't work." As the changing climate disrupts familiar weather patterns, many countries face a dual threat: swamping along the coasts, but also unexpected shrinking freshwater supplies in many regions. “Water has never been evenly distributed around the world, but droughts and an alarming decrease in groundwater create potentially catastrophic conditions,” says Ashok Gadgil, Deputy for Science and Technology for the Energy Technologies Area at LBNL and professor of environmental engineering at UC Berkeley. http://vcresearch.berkeley.edu/news/profile/ashok_gadgil OPINIONS The Climate Crisis and the Transition to a Renewable Economy. The difficult process of transitioning to a renewable resource-based economy requires us to ask: how does political, economic and social change happen? To answer that question it’s helpful to look at the changes we have seen over the past century and also ask: how did they happen? It’s easy to see change: the end of legal racial segregation… http://www.theenergycollective.com/stevenacohen/2376801/the-climate-crisis-and-the-transition-to-a-renewable-economy-2 BLOGS Why States and Cities Must Lead the Way on Climate Change. Much was made a few months ago about the historic climate agreement in Paris. Much is being made now about the race for the U.S. presidency. The two intersect on the question of whether the next president will build on President Obama’s climate plans or backslide on the progress Mr. Obama has managed against global climate change. http://blogs.wsj.com/experts/2016/04/26/why-states-and-cities-must-lead-the-way-on-climate-change/ California is in a drought emergency.
