AIR POLLUTION Choking on smog, Rome and Milan issue no-car day edicts. Rome and Milan have ordered no-car days next week to combat pollution, which has hit unhealthy levels for weeks mainly because no rain has fallen to wash away the smog. A six-hour ban on cars this Monday and Tuesday was announced by Rome on Thursday, while Milan’s anti-pollution measure sees six-hour bans daily from Monday to Wednesday. https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/europe/choking-on-smog-rome-milan-issue-no-car-day-edicts/2015/12/24/f990ff3c-aa3e-11e5-b596-113f59ee069a_story.html http://www.sacbee.com/news/article51458020.html Plan to clean New Delhi's air may fizzle as auto rules eased. The Indian capital, gasping and choking under record-high air pollution, announced a grand plan to clean its air. But that plan seems to be fizzling before it starts. Arvind Kejriwal, the top elected official of the Indian capital, had said last month that private cars will be allowed on New Delhi’s roads only on alternate days from Jan. 1-15, depending on whether their license plates end in an even or an odd number. http://www.fresnobee.com/news/nation-world/world/article51455730.html http://www.sfchronicle.com/news/science/article/Plan-to-clean-New-Delhi-s-air-may-fizzle-as-auto-6719209.php More cities issue smog alerts. Dangerous smog levels are spreading to other parts of China following two air quality red alerts in the capital Beijing earlier this month. Cities in the eastern provinces of Hebei, regarded as China's most polluted province, and Shandong have issued their first red alerts as excessive pollution levels are expected to last more than 24 hours. http://www.eenews.net/greenwire/2015/12/24/stories/1060030008 CLIMATE CHANGE Paris climate goals mean emissions must drop below zero. If governments are serious about the global warming targets they adopted in Paris, scientists say they have two options: eliminating fossil fuels immediately or finding ways to undo their damage to the climate system in the future. The first is politically impossible — the world is still hooked on using oil, coal and natural gas — which leaves the option of a major cleanup of the atmosphere later this century. http://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/environment/2015/12/24/climate-negative-emissions/77871252/ A Black Carbon Crackdown Could Cool Temperatures. Black carbon, also known as soot, has an important role in global warming, especially in the Arctic. When it’s in the atmosphere, it traps heat, and when it falls on snow or ice, it speeds up melting. Curbing black carbon emissions could help slow down the planet’s warming. On the margins of the Paris climate conference, where governments made plans to keep global average temperatures below 2C (3.6F) by 2100, scientists and policymakers discussed other air pollutants that also contribute to global warming. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/black-carbon-crackdown_567b0a3be4b014efe0d7fa13 This is Why Scientists Have Hope For the Climate. There’s no getting around the fact that climate change is a bummer. The planet is warming, ice is melting, oceans are acidifying and, well, you get the point. While the bad news is important — it lets us know what we’re getting into with this whole climate change thing — it’s also worth remembering there’s reason for hope. http://www.climatecentral.org/news/scientists-climate-hope-19838?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+climatecentral%2FdjOO+Climate+Central+-+Full+Feed VEHICLES DOE releases three reports showing strong growth in US fuel cell and hydrogen technologies market. The US Department of Energy (DOE) released three new reports today showcasing strong growth across the US fuel cell and hydrogen technologies market. According to these reports, the United States continues to be one of the world’s largest and fastest growing markets for fuel cell and hydrogen technologies. With support from the Energy Department, its national laboratories and private industry have already achieved significant advances in fuel cell and hydrogen technologies, resulting in reduced costs and improved performance. http://www.greencarcongress.com/2015/12/20151224-doeh2.html GREEN ENERGY Why 2015 may be remembered as a transformative year for how we get energy. The United States is on track to shut down a record amount of coal-fired power plants in 2015. At the same time, it has installed a record amount of new solar energy capacity. The past year, in other words, hints at a historic transition for the U.S. energy sector. From dramatic price plunges for oil and natural gas to the significant emergence of industrial batteries for energy storage, 2015 was on a momentous course even before the world came together in Paris to agree on steps to reduce global warming. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/energy-environment/wp/2015/12/24/why-2015-may-be-remembered-as-a-transformative-year-for-how-we-get-energy/ BLOGS Building a Renewable Energy Future. The U.S. has some big problems that require bold solutions. Unfortunately, books about solutions to our society's problems are often given short shrift by reviewers or languish on our bookshelves. As I often say, this country has more problems than it deserves and more solutions than it uses. Now comes S. David Freeman. In 1974 David Freeman, an energy engineer and lawyer, wrote much of and directed all of the research for the book, A Time to Choose: America's Energy Future, a comprehensive early inquiry into America's energy crisis. A Time to Choose offered ideas galore about how our country could use efficiency and conservation to benefit the environment and the economy and ushered in a new era of energy efficiency. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/ralph-nader/building-a-renewable-ener_b_8870814.html Cities will help lead in putting Paris climate agreement into action. World leaders came together this month and reached an historic agreement to combat climate change. At the international talks in Paris, the United States, China, India and more than 180 other countries committed to reducing their carbon pollution and protecting future generations from extreme drought, storms, floods and heat waves. Though more work needs to be done, this bold agreement represents the biggest step the world has ever taken to defuse the climate threat. http://thehill.com/blogs/congress-blog/energy-environment/264020-cities-will-help-lead-in-putting-paris-climate California is in a drought emergency.
