Background: The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has developed an International Standard (ISO 50001) that specifies the requirements for an energy management system that allows a facility operator to develop and implement a comprehensive energy policy. Facility operators establish energy savings objectives, set energy savings targets, and develop action plans to achieve these. The development of an ISO 50001 compliant energy management system enables facility operators to improve their energy performance while assuring compliance of their plans with demonstrable reductions. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Superior Energy Performance (SEP) Program provides two paths to confirm compliance with energy efficiency performance goals. These pathways allow a facility operator to demonstrate the achievement of energy performance goals using a number of energy performance indication models. The website containing detailed information about ISO 50001 can be accessed at: http://www.energy.gov/isosep. California is in a drought emergency.
