AIR POLLUTION Air Pollution Linked to Increased Mortality Even Below EPA Limits: Study. You knew air pollution was unhealthy, but you didn't know it was this unhealthy. That death rates among people over 65 are higher in zip codes with more fine-particulate air pollution, as a new study from Harvard School of Public Health suggests, may not come as a surprise. http://time.com/3910341/air-pollution-coal-smog-smoke-research-harvard/ Battling deadly air pollution on World Environment Day. Air pollution is the world's biggest environmental problem and New Delhi has the highest levels of all cities around the globe, according to the World Health Organization, with 3.2 years of life lost for the average Indian because of it. India has the four most polluted cities in the world, WHO said in a report, findings that were vehemently challenged by India's government. https://en-maktoob.news.yahoo.com/battling-deadly-air-pollution-world-environment-day-062719147.html For much of its history, Chicago covered by smoke, soot. The smoke and soot were so thick, they blotted out the sun. Residents who hung their clean clothing to dry hauled in dingy white shirts and gritty underwear. Opened windows meant soiled curtains and filthy sills. Brand-new buildings quickly weathered as the caustic pollution ate away the stone. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/history/ct-dirty-air-pollution-environment-chicago-flashback-per-0607-jm-20150605-story.html#page=1 'Air pollution in Indian cities threat to future generations'. Union Minister for Science and Technology Harsh Vardhan today said that air pollution in big Indian cities was a major threat to future generations. Speaking on the occasion of Environment Day at CSIR-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute here, he said, "Air pollution in metropolitan cities is a major threat to the future generations." http://www.business-standard.com/article/pti-stories/air-pollution-in-indian-cities-threat-to-future-generations-115060501072_1.html New air quality rating raises concerns. When the air quality in Santa Cruz County was given an “F” by the American Lung Association earlier in the year, people took notice. After all, residents were use to an “A” based on the Santa Cruz Mountains’ barrier to Silicon Valley’s pollution and the Bay’s clean winds. The ALA had been receiving air standards results from a site in Santa Cruz, not from the San Lorenzo Valley. After air quality monitors were installed in Scotts Valley and in the San Lorenzo Valley at the Middle School a few years ago, a major inconsistency between the two areas became evident. http://www.goldenstatenewspapers.com/press_banner/new-air-quality-rating-raises-concerns/article_63bf1c88-0b19-11e5-8d23-c3839710ab20.html CLIMATE CHANGE New Analysis Shows Earth Is Warming Faster Than We Thought. Politicians may dither and talking heads bloviate, but the scientific consensus is clear: climate change is real, humans are responsible, and its effects are already being felt around the world. At the same time, some details are in question, including how fast climate change is increasing and which specific effects we see are due to it as opposed to other sources. http://www.forbes.com/sites/matthewfrancis/2015/06/04/new-analysis-shows-earth-is-warming-faster-than-we-thought/ Study dismisses 'hiatus' in global warming, says temperatures up. An apparent slowdown in the pace of global warming in recent years may be an illusion based on skewed data, according to a study on Thursday that found no break in a trend of rising temperatures. In 2013, the U.N. panel of climate experts reported a "hiatus" in warming since about 1998, despite rising man-made emissions of greenhouse gases. That heartened skeptics who say the risks of climate change have been exaggerated. http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/06/04/us-climatechange-temperatures-idUSKBN0OK23I20150604?feedType=RSS&feedName=everything&virtualBrandChannel=11563 Climate Change May Drive Fish and Coral From Equator, Studies Say. As the climate warms, fish may flee the Equator for cooler waters with more oxygen, according to a new study in the journal Science. “The oceans are warming up, and the amount of oxygen in the ocean is going down and will continue to go down,” said Curtis Deutsch, an oceanographer at the University of Washington and one of the study’s authors. “When you put those two things together, it will limit the habitat space an animal has.” http://www.nytimes.com/2015/06/09/science/climate-change-may-drive-fish-and-coral-from-equator-study-says.html DIESEL ACTIVITIES Hayward manufacturer turns diesel-burning trucks into all-electric vehicles. Rather than designing an electric truck from the ground up, a startup company has developed a modular powertrain kit that can be dropped in existing chassis made by diesel-truck manufacturers. Motiv Power Systems is assembling the all-electric powertrain control systems at its Hayward plant. http://www.insidebayarea.com/business/ci_28253602/hayward-manufacturer-turns-diesel-burning-trucks-into-all Clean Air Power Dual-Fuel System Receives Certification. Clean Air Power has received certification on its Genesis-Edge Dual-Fuel engine system from the Environmental Protection Agency and the California Air Resources Board, meaning it's now available for retrofit in every state in the U.S., according to the company. The Genesis-Edge system is available for retrofit on most 2011-2013 model year D13-powered Volvo and MP8-powered Mack Trucks. It replaces up to 85% of diesel with natural gas and is compatible with either compressed natural gas or liquefied natural gas. http://www.truckinginfo.com/news/story/2015/06/clean-air-power-gains-epa-and-carb-certification-for-dual-fuel-system.aspx DROUGHT California’s Drought Spurring Water Recycling at Home. San Diego Gas & Electric and automakers, electric vehicle service providers, public interest environmental groups and labor unions Wednesday signed a formal agreement in support of the utility’s innovative Electric Vehicle Grid-Integration pilot project. If adopted by the California Public Utilities Commission later this year, the Vehicle Grid-Integration pilot project would make electricity a low cost, clean transportation fuel that would be available to more drivers in this California coastal city of 1.4 million on U.S.-Mexico border. http://ens-newswire.com/2015/06/05/san-diego-electric-vehicle-grid-pilot-wins-wide-support/ MISCELLANEOUS DIY: Lawn’s gone so now what? Three ways to save water and still have a fun, versatile outdoor living space. A coworker recently told me that, due to new watering restrictions in her city, her family was thinking about replacing their lawn with artificial turf. With a moderately sized yard in a suburban neighborhood, the professional estimate she got was $10,000 to replace the lawn with synthetic grass. To give her a more affordable, and, in my opinion, more preferable option, I showed her a photo of our backyard, where, last fall, we traded lawn and sprinklers for succulents and a drip system. http://www.santacruzsentinel.com/lifestyle/20150604/diy-lawns-gone-so-now-what-three-ways-to-save-water-and-still-have-a-fun-versatile-outdoor-living-space BLOGS Even Low-Level Air Pollution May Cause Harm. Even low levels of air pollution may not be safe, a new study suggests. The Environmental Protection Agency rates air pollution based on concentrations of particles smaller than 2.5 microns, or PM2.5. It generally regards as safe an annual average of 12 micrograms per cubic meter of air, or 35 micrograms per cubic meter over a one-day period. http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/06/05/even-low-level-air-pollution-may-cause-harm/?_r=0 California is in a drought emergency.
