State reports water conservation lagged in December. California
is heading into a fourth summer of a historic drought, but when
it comes to conserving water, its urban residents are going
backward. And although tougher state water restrictions may be on
the way later this month, critics say the new rules don’t go
nearly far enough, and the state risks severe water shortages if
it doesn’t do more soon.

Water conservation weakening as California drought worsens.
California is heading into the fourth summer of a historic
drought, but when it comes to conserving water, its urban
residents are going backward. State officials are mulling tougher
water restrictions, but critics say the new rules being

Scientists explain how climate change helps fuel California
drought. Climate change is increasing the risk of severe drought
in California by causing warm periods and dry periods to overlap
more often, according to a new study. Rising temperatures
resulting from increased greenhouse gas emissions mean warm and
dry periods are coinciding more frequently, the study authors
say. And that is amplifying the effects of low precipitation.

VEHICLES

JURUPA VALLEY: City may buy hybrid, natural-gas vehicles. The
Jurupa Valley City Council could green light the purchase of 14
vehicles for use by city employees. The cost – paid for with
air-quality district dollars – would be $158,601 for six Ford
C-Max hybrid sedans and $276,438 for eight clean natural
gas-fueled Ford F-250 pickups. The total cost would be $435,039.
South Coast Air Quality Management District money, given to
cities for pollution-reducing programs, would pay for the
vehicles.

Climate change is messing with leaves, and leaves are messing
back. Climate change is a lot like Mr. Miyagi from The Karate
Kid. Or rather, it is like an evil, disembodied Mr. Miyagi
looming over the globe, whispering “Leaf on. Leaf off. Leaf on.
Leaf off. Don’t forget to breathe.” Basically, a new study
published yesterday in the journal Nature Climate Change shows
that vegetation patterns around the world are shifting thanks to
climate change.
