AIR POLLUTION

Huge Numbers of Europeans Will Die From Air Pollution in the Next
20 Years. Europe is failing on a range of environmental
indicators from air to water and biodiversity Hundreds of
thousands of people in the E.U. — perhaps millions, if present
trends continue — will suffer premature death in the next two
decades because of toxic air, a new report says.

concern in the country over the impact of air, water and soil
pollution. Hosted by former state television reporter Chai Jing,
"Under the Dome" offers a well-produced look at the cost to the
environment of 30 years of breakneck economic development.

On-Board School Bus Filtration System Reduces Pollutants by 88
Percent. An on-board air filtration system developed
specifically for school buses reduces exposure to vehicular
pollutants by up to 88 percent, according to a study by
researchers at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. The
high-efficiency cabin air, or HECA, system could help protect the
25 million American children who commute on school buses nearly
every day. Children are more susceptible to air pollution than
adults because they breathe more quickly and their immune and
cardiovascular systems are still developing, said Yifang Zhu, the
study’s senior author and an associate professor in the
department of environmental health sciences.

long-term environmental goals."

DROUGHT

California’s terrifying climate forecast: It could face droughts
nearly every year. Not long ago, scientists at NASA and two major
universities warned of an inevitable “megadrought” that will
parch the southwestern United States for 35 years, starting
around 2050. By then, a new study says, Californians should be
fairly accustomed to long, harsh and dry conditions.
