State Senator Bob Wieckowski (D-Fremont) recognized Hayward’s Way To Be Designs today for its selection as a CoolCalifornia Small Business Award winner by the California Air Resources Board. Way To Be Designs and 15 other companies were honored during a ceremony at the California Environmental Protection Agency building. http://patch.com/california/castrovalley/wieckowski-recognizes-hayward-coolcalifornia-small-business-award-winner Aperia Wins 2014 CoolCalifornia Small Business Award. Aperia Technologies, makers of a versatile, self-powered, bolt-on tire inflation technology, today announced it has been named a winner of a CoolCalifornia Small Business Award by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). The American made Halo Tire Inflator is designed to solve the problem of tire under-inflation in medium- and heavy-duty trucks and trailers, reducing fuel consumption, tire waste and emissions. http://www.prweb.com/releases/2015/02/prweb12515348.htm Capitola Veterinary Hospital named Cool California Business of the Year. As the local economy struggled in the past five years to recover from recession, Dr. River May at Capitola Veterinary Hospital doubled the number of clients, grew his staff from six to 11 employees, and saved $1,500 a year by making decisions from an environmental perspective. http://www.santacruzsentinel.com/business/20150211/capitola-veterinary-hospital-named-cool-california-business-of-the-year AIR POLLUTION Drivers Exposed to 29 Times More Air Pollution While Stopped at Red Lights, Study Finds. Driving with the windows down on a clear blue day may feel refreshing. Really, though, that breeze is toxic. According to new research, you’re dosing yourself with high levels of harmful air pollution every time you stop at a red light. Braking at traffic lights, and then accelerating when they turn green, makes up only around 2 percent of the time a driver spends in the car. Yet that scant amount of time makes up fully 25 percent of a driver’s total air pollution exposure, according to a study published Thursday in the journal Atmospheric Environment. http://www.newsweek.com/drivers-exposed-29-times-more-air-pollution-while-stopped-red-lights-study-306698 Delhi Wakes Up to an Air Pollution Problem It Cannot Ignore. For years, this sprawling city on the Yamuna River had the dirtiest air in the world, but few who lived here seemed conscious of the problem or worried about its consequences. Now, suddenly, that has begun to change. Some among New Delhi’s Indian and foreign elites have started to wear the white surgical masks so common in Beijing. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/02/15/world/asia/delhi-wakes-up-to-an-air-pollution-problem-it-cannot-ignore.html New air standard for the valley: Say goodbye to your gasoline-burning car. The San Joaquin Valley has the most federal ozone violations in the country over the last 15 years. The region's only ozone triumph is achieving an ozone standard that dates back to the 1970s. And that isn't official yet. But the future may hold an even bigger struggle as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency prepares a new ozone standard this year that will challenge even some of the cleaner air basins across the country. http://www.bakersfieldcalifornian.com/local/x1923720875/New-air-standard-for-the-valley-Say-goodbye-to-your-gasoline-burning-car Fishermen in Goa, India, dread return of mining. ...river, he said, making "our lives miserable." Almost 200 countries agreed a draft text for a deal to fight climate change on Friday, but put off hard choices about narrowing down a vast range of options for limiting a damaging rise in temperatures. http://in.reuters.com/article/2015/02/13/climatechange-talks-idINKBN0LH1TF20150213 Surprisingly, a Voluntary Climate Treaty Could Actually Work. Negotiators around the world are deliberating proposals for an international climate change treaty that will contain a glaring loophole: It won’t be binding. That’s less than ideal, but it’s still worthwhile for several important reasons. First, all treaties are essentially voluntary, short of violators being placed under severe sanctions or the threat of war. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/02/15/upshot/surprisingly-a-voluntary-climate-treaty-could-actually-work.html?_r=0&abt=0002&abg=0 Climate change booklet aims to dispel confusion, misinformation. The Australian Academy of Science has launched a new booklet reiterating that man-made climate change is real. The booklet titled Science Of Climate Change: Questions And Answers warns of the consequences for Australia if no changes are made to address the issue. Academy president Professor Andrew Holmes said there was a gap between public perception of climate change and reality. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-02-16/climate-change-is-happening-now-scientists-warn/6093724 Climate Scientist Tries Arts To Stir Hearts Regarding Earth's Fate. A decade ago, physicist Robert Davies wasn't all that interested in Earth's climate. His field was quantum optics. But while he was working at the University of Oxford in England, he became intrigued by what was going on at Oxford's Environmental Change Institute, just down the road from his lab. Davies started going to seminars at the Institute, and was taken aback, he says, by "the broad gap between what science understands about climate change, and what the public understands." http://www.npr.org/2015/02/16/386064582/climate-scientist-tries-arts-to-stir-hearts-regarding-earths-fate Study challenges climate benefits of U.S. low-carbon fuels. A recent study on the carbon footprint of biofuels is adding a new wrinkle to the already corrugated landscape of alternative fuels policies. University of Michigan research professor John DeCicco wrote a study finding that the current method of calculating the carbon emissions associated with transportation fuels is essentially meaningless. http://www.eenews.net/climatewire/stories/1060013547/search?keyword=california Climate Change Poised to Make Infectious Disease Outbreaks More Frequent. As the Ebola outbreak showed the world recently, the modern age of global air travel has made it far easier for disease to spread. But climate change, which is shuffling habitable zones for pathogen-carrying animals, is poised to make future outbreaks of infectious diseases such as Ebola, H1N1 and TB worse, and more frequent. http://www.newsweek.com/climate-change-poised-make-infectious-disease-outbreaks-more-frequent-307161 Trash-burning plant protected in California climate fights. Scientists are facing a crisis of trust. A Pew Research Center poll released Jan. 29 shows a huge gap between the views of scientists and the general public on a range of issues -- not just climate change but also genetically modified foods, vaccinations, the use of animals in research and the threat of overpopulation. Furthermore, as scientific theories evolve, today's instant mass communication of each step forward and back undermines belief in facts that are proven, like the ability of vaccines to all but eliminate a disease. http://www.mercurynews.com/opinion/ci_27516835/mercury-news-editorial-scientists-must-solve-growing-trust JOSEPH PERKINS: Why Americans are cool toward climate alarmism. ...not only to literature and to cinema, but also to real world issues – like global warming. With only a few months before a major election, it can be tough to get politicians from opposing parties to agree on the color of the sky, much less the future of the planet. That would seem especially true in the rough-and-tumble world of British politics, where the two main candidates for prime minister in the upcoming May election — incumbent David Cameron and challenger Ed Miliband — often prefer insulting each other to finding common ground. Cameron has called Miliband “a muppet” and “a waste of space.” Miliband has replied that Cameron is “dodgy” and “a dunce.” http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/worldviews/wp/2015/02/13/while-us-politicians-argue-about-climate-change-british-pols-decide-the-debate-is-over/ These countries are making polluters pay. ...story was reproduced here as part of the Climate Desk collaboration.
