phaselghg -- Phase I GHG Standards for New Heavy-Duty Engines and Vehicles
Posted: 09 Dec 2014 17:18:31
Adoption of Phase 1 Heavy-Duty Vehicle Greenhouse Gas Emission Standards and Test Procedures are now in effect. On Friday, December 5, 2014, the Office of Administrative Law approved new regulations, and amendments to existing regulations, establishing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission standards for new California medium- and heavy-duty engines and vehicles to harmonize with the existing federal GHG emission standards (Phase 1 GHG Regulations). These regulations, which the Board approved for adoption on December 12, 2013, provide nationwide consistency for engine and vehicle manufacturers, and allow ARB to certify both new vehicles and new engines to GHG standards and to enforce those requirements in California. The formal regulatory documents are posted on the Heavy-Duty GHG Phase 1 2013 webpage. Background In 2011, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration jointly adopted GHG emission standards and fuel economy standards for medium- and heavy-duty engines and vehicles. The program, which phases in between model years 2014 and 2019, establishes the first ever national GHG emission standards for medium- and heavy-duty engines and vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating over 8,500 pounds.
