COOL CALIFORNIA CITY CHALLENGE

Arcata earns prize money to spend on solar panels in statewide
energy challenge. Arcata and nine other cities across California
prevented more than 800,000 pounds of carbon dioxide from being
released in a greenhouse gas reduction challenge, receiving cash
prizes. During the six-month Cool California City Challenge,
cities and teams within them competed to save energy by cutting
electricity use, changing light bulbs, commuting by bike and
other tactics for carbon emissions reduction, said Melanie
Turner, public information officer with the California Air
Resources Board.

Riverside's simply the coolest. To reduce his contribution to

bought a monthly pass, and that really reduced my driving,” said
Bhaigee, 23, a recent UC Riverside graduate who works as an
intern in the mayor’s office. Bhaigee effort helped confirm his
city’s coolness.

expected next year from the expansion of the state climate
change-driven cap-and-trade market for greenhouse gas (GHG)
