CLIMATE CHANGE EPA sends ozone standards to White House (KEY STORY ALREADY) The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) yesterday sent its proposal for revising federal air quality standards for ozone to the White House for review. Such reviews, led by the Office of Management and Budget, can last for a few days to several months. But EPA is under court order to propose a new ozone standard by December, more than six years after it finalized the current standards of 75 parts per billion. http://www.argusmedia.com/News/Article?id=933904 EU poised to agree 2030 climate, energy goals-draft * EU to set tougher 2030 climate change targets * Poorer nations to get financial help * Also sets single energy market goal BRUSSELS, Oct 7 (Reuters) - EU leaders are poised this month to agree three new, tougher climate and energy goals for 2030 and poorer... http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/10/07/climatechange-eu-idUSL6N0S24AB20141007 Kerry to warn of global threat of climate change Secretary of State John Kerry is planning to discuss the global threat of climate change after touring a Boston wind technology testing center with his British counterpart, Philip Hammond. Children growing up in areas of Southern California with high levels of fine particulate pollution have shown diminished lung function when they reach adulthood due to the region’s air pollution, which ranks among the worst in the nation. African Americans have higher rates of asthma than most other groups. Asthma symptoms, emergency room visits and hospital admissions related to respiratory symptoms -- including asthma -- increase when air pollution levels go up. http://www.lasentinel.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=13657&catid=80&Itemid=170 GREEN ENERGY SolarCity now offering loans to buy solar systems SolarCity Corp., the San Francisco Bay Area company that helped boost residential solar power adoption through leases, said it now will allow customers to buy systems with a loan it offers -- an option the firm says can be cheaper than a lease. They meet daily for first- and second-level GTEC courses, which focus on energy conservation, a review of lighting standards, how to measure energy and analyzing energy-saving measures. GTEC students also deal with water conservation and indoor air quality. Part of the curriculum model calls for students to network with industry professionals. While students don't have any projects in the works at present, plans are in the works to construct a solar array at East Campus Educational... http://www.modbee.com/2014/10/08/3581932/yosemite-high-school-adds-green.html?sp=%2f99%2f1623%2f2307%2f OPINION Will the drought kill California's economy? ...industrialization is about to come due in the form of a catastrophic ecological disaster -- one that might lead to the sixth great mass extinction on a scale similar to the meteor believed to have taken out the dinosaurs. (Yes, that means you, human reader.) Here in California, the current drought -- which some scientists believe may be the worst in 500 years -- understandably leaves many Golden State residents, always aware of water restrictions in a region surrounded by deserts, with a sense of disquiet.... http://www.latimes.com/opinion/opinion-la/la-ol-rall-california-drought-economy-20141008-story.html Next Steps for a Climate Change Policy for California Governor Brown spoke to the United Nations Climate Summit last month. He made a strong pitch for state and local government activism to fight climate change. The Governor also promised to set an ambitious goal for carbon reduction for 2030 that “will also require heightened political will.” The Governor’s timing is perfect because California’s climate change law is about to make a real impact on Californians. http://www.foxandhoundsdaily.com/2014/10/next-steps-climate-change-policy-california/ Reg Henry: The awful people are right about climate change In October 2006, The New Yorker magazine, the repository sooner or later of all human wit and knowledge, printed a prophetic cartoon on the subject of climate change. By the veteran cartoonist Gahan Wilson, it showed an older couple sitting on their porch. The man is reading his newspaper, and although little is shown of him, his bald head and furrowed brow make him appear grumpy, as if he... http://www.modbee.com/2014/10/08/3580365/reg-henry-the-awful-people-are.html BLOGS Shift to Low-Carbon Economy Could Free Up $1.8 Trillion, Study Says ...high-profile attention. The issue dominated the agenda at the UN climate summit, and is being reprised in Washington this week at an annual meeting of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, where this year CEOs will join talks about how to deal with global warming. The heightened efforts come amid studies describing the costs and benefits of the shift away from carbon-based energy. The latest come from the Climate Policy Initiative, which on Oct. 9 published two reports indicating... http://insideclimatenews.org/carbon-copy/20141009/shift-low-carbon-economy-could-free-18-trillion-study-says Climate Change Worsens Coastal Flooding From High Tides Science Cindy Minnix waits for a bus in a flooded street on Oct. 18, 2012, in Miami Beach. A changing climate is making floods related to high tides more frequent, scientists say. A wave of high tides is expected to hit much of the East Coast this week. Restructuring the electric sector is easier said than done. Yet, a number of states are seeking to align utility profits with performance - based on societal objectives such as increased reliability, greater resilience, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Unsurprisingly after the effects of Hurricane Sandy, New York is the avant-garde. Its Reforming the Energy Vision proceeding, which got underway earlier this year, is already guiding New York utilities to improve delivery... http://www.huffingtonpost.com/craig-lewis/evolving-the-electric-uti_b_5953662.html Study: Renewables As Green As You'd Expect A lot of metals go into making solar cells and wind turbines, raw materials such as copper, iron, rare earth metals such as indium and others and that involve a lot of greenhouse gases and other pollution when they're mined and processed to make parts for renewable power generators. So just how green are these sources of low-carbon renewable electricity? Pretty green, it turns out. http://insideclimatenews.org/content/study-renewables-green-you%E2%80%99d-expect What Do Global Warming And Sweaters Have In Common? This Climate Scientist Explains. Climate scientist Adam Levy got sick of hearing all the usual arguments against the existence of climate change, so he decided to fight back with a clever and easy to understand YouTube channel.
