Salinas air quality nets an 'A' grade.  A new report on air
quality in California notes that Monterey County earned an A
grade during 2013 — one of the healthiest counties in the state —

Climate change could worsen ozone levels across the U.S., study
says. Smog could worsen across the United States in the coming
decades as climate change boosts summer temperatures and makes
ozone levels more difficult to control, a new study says. 
Americans can expect the number of days with unhealthy air to
jump 70% by mid-century unless emissions of smog-forming
pollutants are slashed, according to a study led by the federally
funded National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo.

Germany and Brazil offer climate policy lessons for the U.S. Even
across three continents, the United States, Brazil and Germany
have much to learn from each other when it comes to fighting
climate change, according to experts. "Illuminating
state-national relations in Germany and Brazil also helps us in
the United States," said Vivian Thomson, an associate professor
of environmental sciences and politics at the University of

DROUGHT

Water flows uphill? Maybe, in California drought. Water has
flowed from Northern California's snow-capped peaks to the
South’s parched cities ever since the California Aqueduct was
built in the 1960s. Now, amid one of the worst droughts in
history, state officials are considering an audacious plan to
send some of the water back uphill. State water engineers say
using pumps to reverse the flow of the aqueduct would be a first

FUELS

Court upholds EPA's 2013 RFS rule. A federal court today upheld
U.S. EPA's 2013 renewable fuel standard rule against a challenge
from a refinery owned by Delta Air Lines Inc. The U.S. Court for
the District of Columbia Circuit said in a ruling this morning
that EPA issued a reasonable rule setting the targets for
renewable fuel use last year. The agency also adequately took
into account the ability of refiners to purchase credits to meet

VEHICLES

Toyota's American office gets hydrogen fuel cells. The first
Toyota hydrogen fuel cell cars reach the market next year, but
already the company is exploiting the technology to cut costs and
carbon emissions at one of its largest office complexes. The
Japanese manufacturer had gone green and had been focussing on
hybrid cars with the Prius being its best-seller. Soon, Toyota
will also introduce hydrogen fuel cell cars from next year

Senate takes up energy bill amid Keystone squabble.  The Senate
has voted to take up a bill that supporters of the Keystone XL
oil pipeline want to use as a vehicle to authorize immediate
construction of the proposed pipeline from Canada to the United

Yakima Basin canals could generate electricity. Farmers across
the Yakima Basin depend on a network of canals to deliver water
for their crops. Now, scientists believe the canals could provide
another resource to the region: renewable energy. Capturing the
energy contained in the water flowing in the Northwest's rivers
is nothing new — hydropower dams have been doing just that since

Mars Moves Toward Carbon-Neutral Operations With Massive Wind
Farm In Texas. Mars Inc. is partnering with the Sumitomo Corp. of
Americas and BNB Renewable Energy Holdings to build a wind farm
capable of producing enough renewable electricity to power all of
its U.S. operations. Mesquite Creek Wind, a 118-turbine,
200-megawatt wind farm, was jointly developed by Sumitomo and
BNB. Its output will equal Mars's electric use at of its 70 U.S.
sites, which includes 37 factories. Posted.

Solar Inc. gets CA$115 million loan to build solar projects for
Ontario. Ontario's energy transformation from fossil fuels to
renewables took another step forward last week with the
announcement of 115.5 million Canadian dollars ($105 million) in
financing from the National Bank of Canada to Canadian Solar
Inc., allowing for the completion of 30 megawatts of new

MISCELLANEOUS

Thieves find a lucrative new commodity: grease. In darkened
alleyways, a slimy cat-and-mouse game is playing out across
America. Men in trucks are fighting over a dirty and sometimes
foul-smelling substance that restaurants once paid to get hauled

Acidification already eating away at tiny creatures along West
Coast. It didn't take long for researchers examining the tiny sea
snails to see something amiss. The surface of some of their thin
outer shells looked as if they had been etched by a solvent.
Others were deeply pitted and pocked. These translucent sea
butterflies known as pteropods, which provide food for salmon,
herring and other fish, hadn't been burned in some horrific lab

 Lodi’s air and water quality will be discussed at the Lodi Lake
Nature Area Docent program from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, May 8, in the
Bud Sullivan Community Room of the Lodi Public Library, 201 W.
Locust St.  Lodi’s Storm Drain Detectives, students from Lodi and

Setting it straight. The editorial “Fracking fluid’s disclosure
is step in the right direction” on May 3 should have said
California’s fracking laws require companies to publicly disclose
trade secret ingredients in an additive but not the ingredients’
precise concentrations. They must release these concentrations to

Trade wter for gas, oil? SB 4, the legislation regulating
hydraulic fracturing and acid matrix well stimulation practice
within California, is a half-step in the right direction. At
least there are some restraints put on hydraulic fracturing
within California. The main problem is that, in a time when
Californians are being asked to conserve water, drillers are

Chrysler 100, midsize CUV and plug-in hybrid minivan launch bid
to go mainstream.  The news just keeps on rolling from Auburn
Hills today, as Fiat Chrysler continues to detail its five-year
growth plan. This time round, we're talking about Chrysler. The
troubled American brand has been limited in the past few years to
the lamentable Sebring/200, the Town & Country and the 300,
