Al Gore recently criticized Barack Obama — among many others — for the federal government’s record on climate change. In the pages of Rolling Stone, Gore commends some of Obama’s early moves, such as making the case that environmental security is inseparable from national security, but he concludes that the president has “failed to use the bully pulpit to make the case for bold action on climate change.” Posted. http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/obamas-record-on-the-environment/2011/07/21/gIQA3d9BoI_story.html VEHICLES GM Sales Rise 8% On Crossover, Small Car Demand. General Motors posted an 8 percent rise in July sales, helped by demand for crossovers as well as small, fuel-efficient vehicles. GM said today its passenger car sales rose 8 percent last month, and crossover demand jumped 20 percent. Combined retail sales of the GMC Terrain and Chevrolet Equinox crossovers rose 73 percent. Chevrolet sold more than 24,000 Cruze models last month – the fourth consecutive month that sales of the compact have topped 20,000 units. Californians in the market for zero-emissions or electric vehicles are eligible for rebates of up to $2,500 toward their purchase, thanks to S40 million in funding recently approved by the California Environmental Protection Agency’s Air Resources Board. The funding, announced last month, is estimated to put thousands of ultra-clean vehicles on the road, according to the Air Resources Board. The money will be divided three ways: Posted. http://www.earthtechling.com/2011/08/clean-vehicle-buying-gets-40-million-bump/print/ GREEN ENERGY Adding Biomass To Coal Much Less Expensive Than Carbon Capture – Study. Faced with increasing pressure to reduce carbon emissions, coal-burning power plants may be better off adding biomass to the energy mix rather than waiting for expensive carbon capture and storage technology, a study suggests. Shrinking greenhouse gas emissions with biomass from forestry waste, logging residues or commercially produced wood pellets costs a fraction of what carbon capture and storage technology abatement would, states a report from the RAND Corp. The newest addition to the New York Police Department’s fleet of patrol vehicles is not built for high-speed chases, but for the stop and go of city traffic. On Monday the Police Department deployed 10 Chevrolet Volts – a mostly electric vehicle — as part of a pilot program. A spokeswoman for the Police Department, Barbara Chen, said that the department intended to add a total of 25 electric cars to the department’s fleet in the future. Climate scientists have long called for steps to limit the buildup of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, and they are growing more and more worried about the slow pace of action. Yet their sense of urgency has not permeated society at large, and it certainly does not seem to be influencing the course of events in Washington, where climate legislation stalled last year. Ricardo will lead a feasibility study project—HeatWave—in which it will work with QinetiQ to evaluate a novel diesel fuel reformation concept that uses microwaves and waste heat from a heavy vehicle’s exhaust to reform the incoming fuel, increasing its calorific value and hence reducing net carbon dioxide emissionsPosted. http://www.greencarcongress.com/2011/08/heatwave-20110802.html Where Are The Jobs? Increasingly, They’re In Sustainability. Unemployment is still hovering around 9%, an unencouraging picture for politicians looking to get reelected in 2012. For President Obama, the good news is in the green movement. Sustainability related job postings continue to surge forward, even as the rest of the economy stagnates. Even the Wall Street Journal, owned by Rupert Murdoch’s Fox News right wing media empire, has jumped on the green job bandwagon, saying “positions tied to sustainability and renewable energy” represented a potential “bright spot.” Posted. http://www.triplepundit.com/2011/08/jobs-increasingly-theyre-sustainability/ Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Race Under Way. US Pharmacy chain Walgreens has announced plans to offer electric vehicle charging stations at about 800 locations across the country by the end of the year. This will take it to the status of the nation’s largest charging station retail host. Major markets expected to host these sites include Boston, Denver, Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. Select locations in Florida, New Jersey, Oregon, Tennessee and Washington state will also receive charging stations, Walgreens says. Last year, investors pumped a record $211 billion into renewables -- about one-third more than the $160 billion invested in 2009, and a 540% rise since 2004. And for the first time, developing economies overtook developed ones in terms of "financial new investment"-spending on utility-scale renewable energy projects and provision of equity capital for renewable energy companies. Operating an electric vehicle in China today emits more greenhouse gases than simply driving a gasoline-fueled equivalent, according to emissions expert Juerg Gruetter of Gruetter Consulting. The reason is that, despite the country's push to promote electric vehicles, China's power grid is so overwhelmingly fed by dirty coal that recharging the battery-powered rides will release far more emissions than just putting gasoline in the tanks of the nation's 200-plus million registered vehicles. It's not everyday that an automaker launches a new marque, let alone a disruptive vision of the future. But BMW did just that last week in Frankfurt with the unveiling of its new i sub-brand. However, the story behind BMW i isn't limited to the i3 city car and i8 plug-in hybrid concepts. Just four days ago, we were celebrating the news that President Obama reached a landmark agreement with 13 automakers to pursue a 54.5 MPG average fleet goal by the vehicle model year 2025. The agreement was a huge step forward for Obama’s environmental campaign, and shows that automakers and our government are on the same page when it comes to fuel efficiency. Many electric concept cars feature in-wheel electric motors to move them down the road, but only recently have they truly proven themselves as the greenest way to move future hybrid vehicles. A Vauxhall Vivaro diesel hybrid equipped with Protean’s electric in-wheel motors recently showed a 300 percent fuel economy improvement in hybrid mode, showing that there really is something to these bad boys.
