EPA Wears Many Hats in Sprawling Environmental Justice
Initiative. Lisa Garcia has no illusions: In a recent interview,
the U.S. EPA associate assistant administrator compared her
vision of nationwide environmental equity to achieving world
peace. Indeed, when Garcia first joined EPA as its environmental
justice adviser, she was struck by the educational work that
still needed to be done in overburdened communities. Posted.

GREEN ENERGY

German Firms Move Toward Postnuclear Economy. HANOVER, Germany —
Josef Mehrer, a family-owned German company established more than
120 years ago, has survived by adapting with the times. Early on,
it made sewing machines, then machines for cleaning beer vats,
then it switched to compressors in the 1950s. In the early 1990s,
the company placed a bet on the renewable energy sector and
started to make compressors for the emerging biogas industry.

OPINION

Approve environmentally friendly quarry. I am a proud Southwest
Riverside County resident and have called Temecula Valley home
for the last 13 years. Through my long career as a local realtor,
I have seen our region through times of growth and recession.
When I first heard of the Liberty Quarry project in 2005, I knew
it made sense for Riverside County both environmentally and
economically. Posted.

Los Angeles to slather its rooftops with solar panels. Here's a
crazy idea: apply the same incentives that have made Germany the
world leader in rooftop solar power to a place that is actually
sunny. Also, use the power generated from these panels to zero
out the electricity costs of people in low-income housing, so the
city has more money for education. Posted.

When the Weather Outside is Frightful, Americans Find Climate
Change Suspect. If you want to change the mind of a climate
change skeptic, argue with them on a warm day. These words of
advice stem from studies done by researchers affiliated with
Columbia University’s Center for Research on Environmental
Decisions (CRED), which found that people who thought the current
day was warmer than usual were more likely to be concerned about
global warming than those who thought the day was unusually cold.
