C02 is Green, a group with ties to the fossil fuel industry, has launched a new ad campaign in the “The Washington Post” that urges people to call their senators and vote against the cap-and-trade bill, reports the New York Times. The half-page ad says the president’s bill will not change the climate and will increase the cost of living, driving up the price for electricity, transportation, fuel and food. Water shortages and threats to road and other critical infrastructure were identified by county leaders as two of their top concerns about global climate change. About 100 local elected and government officials as well as concerned citizens participated in a daylong workshop Wednesday in San Luis Obispo to discuss strategies for minimizing and preparing for the severe impacts of climate change that are expected over the coming decades. The latest study purporting to absolve the scientists involved in November's Climategate scandal was published last week. On predictable cue, the news was followed by a letter from our admirers at the United Nations Foundation and the Natural Resources Defense Council urging us to "set the record straight" on "these bogus scandals." Having devoted considerable space to Climategate, we're happy to explain why we can't do that. Senate Democrats hoping to negotiate a scaled-down carbon cap on power plants are running out of time to make that happen. At the most, they have two weeks to convince Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) that they have the 60 votes needed to pass the bill, something Reid has said is a prerequisite before he includes it in the broader energy bill expected on the floor this month. Supporters of California's global warming law have raised more than $2 million so far to defend the landmark legislation in what's shaping up as an expensive November ballot battle. Filings with the California secretary of state show that environmental groups and clean energy advocates were big givers to the campaign against Proposition 23, which would suspend AB 32 until the unemployment rate drops to 5.5 percent. City Manager Fran David of Hayward signed a resolution last month opposing a ballot measure, California Jobs Initiative, which questions the economic impact and job loss the Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006 is causing. The bill required that California greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions be reduced to 1990 1evels by 2020. Nearly four months before the Nov. 2 general election, partisans are taking sides on Prop 23. Officially dubbed the California Jobs Initiative, Prop 23 would roll back implementation of the state's global warming legislation, AB 32, until the state's unemployment level goes below 5.5 percent for four straight quarters. Currently, California's unemployment rate stands at 12.5 percent. This November, California voters are in danger of undoing one of the most progressive pieces of environmental legislation ever passed. Texas oil companies have taken advantage of California’s quirky initiative system to place Proposition 23 on the ballot. This proposition has one purpose: to undo California’s Global Warming Solutions Act (also known as Assembly Bill 32, or “A.B. 32”), which stands as a landmark piece of bipartisan clean energy legislation and is a model for federal action. California-based Pearson Fuels has opened an E85 station in San Jacinto Valley, Calif., with plans for more. Funded by the non-profit Community Environmental Council and the California Air Resources Board, the station offers “alternative fuel now,” according to Mike Lewis, co-owner of Pearson Fuels. Lewis said the company also received funds for two biodiesel terminals in northern and southern Calif. Oil giant BP announced Thursday that it has agreed to pay $98.3 million for the La Jolla-based cellulosic ethanol business of Verenium Corp. The deal includes a San Diego research lab and a facility in Jennings, La., designed to demonstrate large-scale production of ethanol from fibrous materials rather than food crops. Researchers at Stanford University are trumpeting new findings that they say show agriculture’s so-called green revolution has greatly reduced forest clear-cutting and resulting climate-warming emissions—an unforeseen benefit to industrial agriculture. Because agricultural “advancements” like fertilizers, genetically engineered crops and pesticides have boosted yields, there has been less need to slash and burn for additional fields, and this has meant fewer carbon emissions, the report says.
