Jerry Brown Defends Embattled State Climate Law But Is Open To
'Adjustments' San Francisco -- California Attorney General Jerry
Brown defended the state's climate change law yesterday,
explaining that he sees room for "adjustments" but would not
support an outright suspension of greenhouse gas reductions until
the economy improves. Brown, the leading Democratic candidate
for governor in the state, said his likely GOP opponent in the
November general election, former eBay CEO Meg Whitman, is
mistaken in her view that freezing the law for a year or more
would help the California economy and jobs rebound. Posted.

Illegal Immigration and LA's Air Pollution. Listen to/Watch
entire show: . Ten counties with America's worst air pollution
are all in California, and LA has the worst Smog in the country.
That's according to the American Lung Association. We'll hear
what that means for public health. We also hear about efforts to
delay AB 32, Governor Schwarzenegger's attack on global warming.
On our rebroadcast of today's To the Point, Arizona officials
claim federal inaction required the state to crack down on
illegal immigration. Does the new state law provide needed
protection or violate civil rights and interfere with federal
authority? Posted.

Germany, Mexico Hosting Meeting Of 45 Nations In Bonn To Push
Talks On Climate Deal Ahead. Berlin (AP) — Five months after the

Mexico are teaming up in an effort to break the deadlock in
negotiations on a global climate deal. They will co-host a
three-day meeting in Bonn starting Sunday of representatives from
a selected 45 countries with hopes of building trust and clearing
some of the rubble left from Copenhagen, German Environment
Minister Norbert Roettgen said this week. Posted.

Pew Study Calls For A National Plan To Coordinate Adaptation To
Climate. The federal government should create a national program
to help the country adapt to effects of climate change that can't
be avoided even with steep cuts in emissions, according to a new
report from the Pew Center on Global Climate Change. "By taking
steps now to adapt to climate change, we will be far better able
to limit future damages and their associated costs," says the
analysis. Posted.

Traders Hold Back With U.S. Climate Bill Delayed. Analysts were
expecting carbon trading to pick up in the United States with the
introduction of a climate and energy bill on Monday, but after
the bill's introduction was sidelined indefinitely, those new
traders did not materialize. The legislation, crafted by Sens.
John Kerry (D-Mass.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and John Lieberman
(I-Conn.), was thought to specify how many offsets could be
imported under an emissions trading scheme. Posted.

Senior Dems Talk Tough on Climate, Immigration. The Senate's
impasse over climate change and immigration legislation heads
into the weekend without any sign of resolution. Democratic
leaders yesterday signaled they plan to tackle both controversial
issues this year, even if it means ending the "tripartisan"
partnership on the climate bill forged more than six months ago
between Sens. John Kerry (D-Mass.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and
Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.). Posted.

South African Company Wants Carbon Credits For 'Clean Coal'
Plant. South African power company Eskom will apply for carbon
credits for a planned "clean coal" power station in Limpopo using
the United Nations' Clean Development Mechanism program. The
company expects the decision about the Medupi plant to be
controversial, especially among environmentalists. Medupi, which
would produce 4,800 megawatts of energy, will run on
supercritical coal technology, which emits less greenhouse gases.
Still, the plant would add about 32 million tons of carbon
dioxide equivalent emissions. Posted.

Global Talks Can Proceed Without U.S. Agreement, U.N.
Secretariat Candidate Says. The lead climate negotiator for Costa
Rica, a potential candidate to take over as head of the United
Nations' climate secretariat when its current chief, Yvo de Boer,
steps down on July 1, told The New York Times that passing U.S.
climate legislation is not "critical" for climate negotiations to
proceed later this year in Cancun, Mexico. If the United States
can pass its own legislation, it would inject a very important
component of trust, Christiana Figueres told the Times. Posted.

Carbon Monoxide Detector Bill A Good Idea. A bill is circulating
through the California Legislature that could potentially have
residents breathing a little bit easier. If passed by lawmakers
and signed into law, it would require residents to install carbon
monoxide monitors if their home has an attached fireplace or
garage. So what are we waiting for? The bill, authored by Sen.
Allen Lowenthal, a Long Beach Democrat, has already passed the
Assembly by a 47-19 vote and now it sits in the Senate. Monitors
are currently required in new homes, but Lowenthal's bill would
extend the requirement to houses, apartments and condominiums.

Our View: Needless Climate Bill In The Cooler. Attempts to limit
greenhouse gas emissions, ostensibly to curb global warming, at
the least have stalled as the chief Republican supporter, Sen.
Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, defected from the tripartisan
backing, raising doubts a bill will emerge from Congress this
year. Graham, Democratic Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts and
independent Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut were to unveil a
compromise Monday expected to include provisions for off-shore
oil drilling, nuclear energy development and restrictions or
costs to be imposed on carbon emissions. Posted.
