Kern County Company Fined For Emissions Violations. The
California Air Resources Board says it has fined Sturgeon & Son
Inc. of Bakersfield $14,500 for emissions violations during 2007
and 2008. CARB says the company failed to properly inspect some
of their diesel vehicles, as required by California law. Failing

CO2 Output Too High To Contain Warming. The world's emissions
are too high to keep the planet from excessive warming by 2050,
according to a report released today from accounting company
PricewaterhouseCoopers. The Big Four firm called for
"challenging" targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at
Copenhagen. Posted.

Carbon Dioxide Not The Only Climate Enemy. UCSD scientists
focusing on others. Greenhouse gases - Carbon dioxide, or CO2, is
the best-known of the compounds that warms the earth’s
atmosphere, but some scientists want more attention paid to
minimizing other greenhouse gases. — Black carbon, or soot, may
be the second leading cause of global warming. Unlike CO2, it
remains in the atmosphere for only a few days or weeks. Posted.

EPA Signals Support For Higher Blends But Delays Decision. U.S.
EPA said today that it may allow the mixing of larger amounts of
ethanol with gasoline, but the agency delayed a final decision on
the matter until mid-2010 to allow for additional testing.
In a letter to biofuels advocate Growth Energy, EPA hinted that
it is likely to support raising the ethanol limit above the 10
percent allowed in gasoline under current regulations. Posted.

Logue Wants Air Rules To Face Popular Vote. Assemblyman Dan
Logue is looking to put AB 32, the 2006 state legislation meant
to address emissions and global warming on a statewide basis,
before voters next year. Logue, R-Linda, said the economic
impacts associated with AB32 are such he wants voters to decide
whether it should be in effect while the economy is in a
recession. Posted.

Our View: Emissions Standards Do More Harm To Economy.
Scientific, economic and political realities are reining in
worldwide efforts to combat global warming. But not so in
California. As others stop short of committing economic suicide,
California's over-aggressive government could inflict further
economical harm on the state. Posted.

UN: El Nino Likely To Last Until May. Geneva - The weak to
moderate El Nino weather system in the tropical Pacific Ocean has
strengthened considerably and could create droughts and floods
around the world until May, a U.N. agency said Wednesday. The
phenomenon of warmer surface temperatures in the central and
eastern Pacific Ocean can affect monsoons and hurricanes, causing
droughts in some places and floods in others, said Rupa Kumar
Kolli of the World Meteorological Organization. Posted.

UN: US, China Climate Offers 'Can Still Evolve'. Geneva — The
U.N.'s environment chief said Tuesday he is optimistic that the
climate change talks beginning in Copenhagen next week will reach
a deal setting firm targets to cut carbon emissions. Recent
offers by the United States and China appear modest compared with
European Union proposals and scientists' demands, but probably
represent only first offers, said Achim Steiner, director of the
U.N. Environment Program. Posted.

When Scientists Behave Like Bullies. This just in from the Times
of London: After the leak of highly embarrassing e-mail messages
from the University of East Anglia's influential Climatic
Research Unit, CRU has been forced to admit that it dumped "the
original raw" climate data used to bolster the case for
human-caused global warming, while retaining only the
"value-added" - read: massaged - data. In short, the CRU dumped
the scientific data, but archived information that supports its
conclusions. Posted.

Gaming The System In Copenhagen. Climate-change skeptics are
barking up the wrong smokestack. The shell game being played
isn't with the science, it's with the solutions - specifically,
the carbon-emission targets that enlightened world leaders are
pledging to meet. That's where the numbers don't add up. Posted.

The Climate Science Isn't Settled. Is there a reason to be
alarmed by the prospect of global warming? Consider that the
measurement used, the globally averaged temperature anomaly
(GATA), is always changing. Sometimes it goes up, sometimes down,
and occasionally—such as for the last dozen years or so—it does
little that can be discerned. Posted.

Most World Leaders to Attend U.N. Climate Summit.
Copenhagen/Canberra - Most world leaders plan to attend a
climate summit in Copenhagen this month, boosting chances that a
new U.N. deal to fight climate change will be reached, host
Denmark said on Tuesday. The number of leaders planning to come
to the December 7-18 talks had risen to 98 out of the 192 members
of the United Nations, Denmark said. The number was up from 65 in

Major Cities At Risk From Rising Sea Level Threat. Sea levels
will rise by twice as much as previously predicted as a result of
global warming, an important international study has concluded.
The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) calculated
that if temperatures continued to increase at the present rate,
by 2100 the sea level would rise by up to 1.4 metres — twice that
predicted two years ago. Posted.

Global Warming Scandal Makes Scientific Progress More Difficult,
Experts Say. The latest revelation came on Sunday with the
publication of a report by The Sunday Times of London that
scientists at the University of East Anglia’s Climate Research
Unit in the United Kingdom confessed to throwing out most of the
raw temperature data on which the theory of global warming is
founded. Posted.

The Global Warming Email We’ve All Been Waiting For. I got a
good chuckle out of this piece by George Monbiot in the Guardian
about the recent global warming e-mail controversy. My view is
that the emails aren’t that damaging. Is it surprising that
scientists would try to keep work that disagrees with their
findings out of journals? Posted.
