The report, by Duke University's Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions, examined how many facilities are likely to emit more than 25,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide. Bill Barclay anticipates that one day Americans will drive their cars on fuel made from algae. He thinks it could help reduce global warming, cut dependence on oil and provide a big payoff on the hundreds of millions of dollars in investment now flowing into algae research. But Barclay doesn't expect any of this to happen soon. With some of the nation's top algae biofuel experts meeting in San Diego this week, Barclay was one of a number of speakers to caution against expecting speedy results. The high-stakes fight over global warming legislation in Congress has forced American businesses to pick sides. And some old alliances are breaking as a result. Big-name companies such as Apple Inc. have resigned from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, dismayed by the group's efforts to block greenhouse gas regulations. Nike gave up its seat on the chamber's board. PG&E Corp. quit the group after a chamber executive suggested holding a "Scopes monkey trial" on the validity of global warming. Washington -- A Senate Democrat who's been worried about the impact of impending climate and energy legislation on manufacturing said Wednesday that he'd back the historic legislation if it contains enough investment incentives and protection for American businesses. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, said those provisions, combined with limits on greenhouse gas emissions, would unleash private capital and create new businesses and a vast number of new jobs. The Senate Environment and Public Works chairwoman said today that she won't schedule hearings and a markup of global warming legislation until U.S. EPA completes its analysis of the measure. Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) explained that because the bill she has written with Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) is so close to the climate measure that passed the House in June, EPA's analysis should not take long. Washington (Reuters) - The Obama administration has warned it could use the Environmental Protection Agency to help cut carbon emissions if Congress drags its heels, but legal and logistical problems could thwart that strategy. A Senate climate bill unveiled last week faces slim odds of being passed and signed into law soon, with the U.S. economy shedding jobs and coal-dependent states fearing it would raise prices for electricity and steel and hurt manufacturing. Washington -- Executives from about 150 companies, many involved in renewable energy technologies, heard a pep talk at the White House and then combed the halls of Congress on Wednesday to argue for passage of a climate bill that is facing an uphill fight in the Senate. The executives in scores of meetings with senators and their staffs sought to counter opponents' arguments that the climate bill, which will force a shift away from fossil fuels, also will lead to much higher energy prices and cost American jobs. At the urging of the supervisor, the County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved Tuesday a motion calling for 100 percent cleanup of the arsenic, perchlorate and other heavy metals the Navy is responsible for dumping at the site. After the fact I learned that license plates had been issued for these units by the State of California Dept of Motor Vehicles. Renewable energy has for years been hailed as the predominant solution to California’s energy dilemma, a sentiment that more recently has been supported by public policy as well. But while there’s no question that sustainable energy is exciting, if Spain’s experience is any example, misplaced government mandates, aggressive special interests and taxpayer-funded subsidies for the clean power industry would cost us dearly.
