Apple Falls From Chamber Over Stance On Climate. You have to
hand it to the folks at Apple Inc. Once they get the bit between
their teeth, no matter how long it takes, a race to the front can
be reasonably predicted. On Monday, the Cupertino company rocked
the world - at least the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's world - by
abruptly quitting the business lobby on account of the latter's
"recent comments opposing the EPA's effort to limit greenhouse
gases." Such comments, like putting climate change through a
"Scopes monkey trial," already have prompted PG&E and others to
exit the chamber. Posted.

Obama Orders Agencies To Cut Emissions, Energy Use. Washington
-- President Barack Obama ordered federal agencies on Monday to
set ambitious goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, cut
energy use, save water and recycle more, urging a government that
once ranked among the nation's largest polluters to "lead by
example" on environmental protection and energy efficiency.

Clinton Gives Newsom Shot In The Arm. Former President Bill
Clinton delivered a boost Monday to San Francisco Mayor Gavin
Newsom's campaign for governor, formally endorsing him in next
year's race and calling Newsom a national leader in green
technology and energy. "San Francisco may be the greatest city in
the entire country" on issues of environment and energy
conservation, "and it may be because of (Newsom's) leadership,"
Clinton told a crowd of students at Los Angeles City College.

Can Lean Times Also Be Green Times? Whitman argues that economic
issues push environmental concerns aside. The governor has long
said both need attention. As the giant cargo cranes at the Port
of Long Beach loomed behind him, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger last
week cut quickly to a debate gaining intensity in his Republican
Party: Should the state's passion for environmental protection
survive a foundering economy? Posted.

Locals Try Sinking Plan to Store CO2 Underground. Germany's
Coal-Burning Plants Are Aiming to Cut Emissions by Burying Them
-- and That Isn't Going Over Well in Some Towns. Brandenburg,
Germany - Ulf Stumpe is scared of carbon dioxide -- but not the
stuff blamed for global warming. What worries him is the CO2 a
local energy firm wants to inject into the earth thousands of
feet under his village. Posted.

Energy Efficiency Ranks High In Country's Plans; CO2 Is Seldom
Discussed. The second of an occasional series on China. Dezhou,
China -- A guide shows off row after row of gleaming, black,
chrome-coated tubes used in the millions of solar thermal water
heaters Himin Solar Energy Group produces each year. The
corporate building alone saves 1 million kilowatt-hours by using
solar heating, the guide informs his group. But when he is asked
how many tons of carbon dioxide emissions the average solar water
heater saves, silence fills the hall. Posted.

Moderate GHG Cuts Could Ward Off Catastrophic Climate Damage –
Study. Enacting "moderate" cuts in greenhouse gas emissions could
dramatically lower the risk of severe future climate change,
according to a new analysis by researchers at the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology. But there's a catch. Limiting Earth's
total temperature rise to roughly 2 degrees Celsius -- the
climate "guardrail" adopted by many governments -- means those
emissions cuts would have to start soon, the study says. Posted.

Pomona Boys and Girls Club helps residents save energy. Pomona -
The young energy efficiency inspectors, dressed in bright colored
t-shirts identifying them as members of the Boys & Girls Club of
Pomona Valley, arrived ready for business last week. The four
club members walked through the home of Raymond Ramirez and
Daniela Macias looking for energy waste. Posted.

Agencies Told To Reduce Emissions. The federal government will
require each agency to measure its greenhouse-gas emissions for
the first time and set targets to reduce them by 2020, under an
executive order signed by President Obama Monday. Posted.

New Report Details Costs of Cutting Greenhouse Gas Emissions.
With enough technological advances, the world could get to a
dramatically lower level of greenhouse gas emissions at a cost of
between one and three percent of global GDP per year, according
to a report issued Tuesday by a group of economists. That price
tag is in line with previous economic estimates aimed at meeting
more modest climate goals. Posted.

Modesto May Trash Blue Bag Recycling Program. The city's blue
bag recycling program could be headed to the big landfill in the
sky. The City Council votes tonight on whether to trash the
12-year-old recycling program, which officials say isn't doing
much to help the environment. The blue bag program allows
residents to put recyclables in blue shopping bags and toss them
into their black, 96-gallon garbage container. Posted.

Southern California Air Projects Get $26.5 M from Stimulus. U.S.
EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson and California Gov. Arnold
Schwarzenegger on Oct. 1 announced $26.5 million in funding for
diesel emission reduction projects in Southern California under
the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. This infusion
of money will help the region finance projects to reduce diesel
emissions, protecting public health and the environment across
the region. Posted.

Commentary: Cool Cash To Be Made On Warming Mania. Many
corporations hopped on the global warming bandwagon because, as
skeptic Sen. James Inhofe, R-Okla., puts it, “This is about
profit, not Gaia” (the Greek earth goddess). When government
regulation seems inevitable, some corporate decision-makers
reckon it's better to be at the table than on the menu. They
seek, in Mr. Inhofe's words, “greater competitive advantage
through regulatory means.” Posted.

EPA Chooses Capping For DDT Off Coast. Nearly 40 years after
pesticide dumping stopped off the Palos Verdes Peninsula, federal
environmental regulators have selected a long-delayed cleanup
strategy to address the toxic mess left behind. The U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency said Monday that it has chosen a
plan - first announced as an alternative in June - to begin
capping a contaminated area of an underwater formation known as
the Palos Verdes Shelf. Posted.

Editorial: Our View: High Cost Of Climate Fees. First of
two-part editorial. California's climate police have begun
charging businesses millions of dollars in global warming fees to
enforce arbitrary regulations, even as their federal counterparts
move to forcibly reduce industrial greenhouse gas emissions with
even more costly regulations. Two bills in Congress propose yet
further convoluted schemes to drive up conventional energy costs
by forcing further emission restrictions. Posted.

Editorial: U.S. Chamber Is A Dinosaur On Climate Change. Silicon
Valley's future, and the nation's, is clean technology. The news
last week that venture investments in clean tech rose 10 percent
from the previous quarter, and that the U.S. government has
invested $60 billion in the sector, make that clear. But the U.S.
National Chamber of Commerce, which purports to be the voice of
the nation's businesses, has turned into a dinosaur when it comes
to clean energy. Posted.

Black Carbon Spurs Melting Of Himalayan Glaciers. Tiny particles
of soot from old diesel engines or wood stoves are "unequivocally
having an impact on glacial melting" in the Himalayas, according
to Chinese and Indian scientists. The results, to be announced
this month in Kashmir, will point to how the soot, known as black
carbon, has accelerated melting in the glaciers, which feed the
river systems of more than half the world's people. The soot both
absorbs heat while in the atmosphere and decreases the Earth's
reflectivity when it settles on otherwise white glaciers. Posted.

Pledge To Scrap Emissions Law Difficult. California
gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman's vow to suspend the state's
global warming initiative may not be easy to implement, advocates
say. The Republican candidate for governor has said she would
move to suspend California's landmark 2006 law, signed by current
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, on the first day she took office.

CARB-Harassed Dealer: We Broke No Law. California dealer Balz
Renggli says the state’s Air Resources Board is wrongly accusing
his store, Moto Forza in Escondido, of once marketing modified
dirtbikes as streetbikes, then registering them for street use.
The allegations led to a $90,000 settlement in April. (Read that

Climate Costs: Can The World Really Afford to Roll Back Carbon
Emissions? By and large, even in Oklahoma, the debate over how
to tackle climate change boils down to a simple question: How
much is this going to cost? That’s been true of the scrum all
year in Congress, which has turned into dueling banjos of
competing studies arguing that climate legislation will either
cost a “postage stamp a day” or kneecap the entire U.S. economy.

Global Warming Fad Not Just Cooling Off, But Dying. The furor
about alleged global warming is declining even faster than global
temperatures, which have been headed south for more than a
decade. “The great global warming scare is over - it is well past
its peak, very much a spent force, sputtering in fits and starts
to a whimpering end,” writes Lawrence Solomon. He adds that most
Americans don’t blame humans for climate change and consider
whatever warming may have occurred as natural. Posted.
