Melinda Cheel: Clean Energy Can Give State A Needed Jolt. This
week, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce took another step backward in
history with its demand for a "Scopes-like" monkey trial on
scientific evidence for climate change. Republicans for
Environmental Protection, a national grass-roots organization,
responded by saying, "The chamber is transparently trying to sow
confusion and polarize the public over climate change. The
chamber is putting the health, economy and security of our
country at risk in pursuit of a narrow, selfish and shortsighted
agenda." Posted.

Owner Of Coal-Fired Power Plants Accused Of Violating Clean Air
Act. Chicago -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and
Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan on Thursday sued the owner
of six coal-fired power plants that are some of the biggest
contributors to dirty air in the Chicago area. In a 75-page
lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago, the federal and
state governments accused Midwest Generation of extending the
life of its aging power plants without installing pollution
controls required under the federal Clean Air Act. Posted.

Advocates Of Geoengineering Work On Man-Made Fixes For Global
Warming. Kansas City, Mo. -- The same way technology got the
planet into this climate- change mess, more than a few scientists
figure modern know-how can get us out. Crank up plankton growth.
Blanket deserts in reflective plastic. Pump greenhouse gases into
rock formations. Make clouds shinier. Build volcanoes. These
ideas - called geoengineering - are not just the stuff of
fantasists. No less an agency than NASA has issued a report on
"Managing Solar Radiation." Posted.

Officials' Tour Prompts Expectations To Act. Pollution: A look
at problem areas has clean-up advocates hopeful. State and
federal officials said Thursday they will form a task force of
Inland residents and government representatives to tackle
pollution and other hazards identified in a day-long bus tour of
beleaguered neighborhoods the previous day. Some problems
identified in Colton, west San Bernardino and Mira Loma, in
northwest Riverside County, are expected to get quick action. A
progress report is expected in October. Posted.

New Culprit Seen in Ozone Depletion. Government scientists who
study the depletion of Earth’s protective ozone layer are
pointing to a previously unheralded culprit: nitrous oxide. Most
of the nitrous oxide in the atmosphere emerges naturally, through
the action of bacteria in the soil, the researchers say. But the
gas is also produced by human activity, through the use of
nitrogen-based fertilizers, the application of livestock manure
to fields, the burning of biofuels and in other ways. Posted.

Legislature Passes First Climate Change Resolution. China's
chief legislative body approved its first resolution on climate
change yesterday, state media said. The resolution, according to
an earlier draft, is expected to call on the government to invest
further in low-carbon technology and greenhouse gas controls. It
may also pave the way for a new emissions policy to be announced
ahead of the U.N. climate talks in Copenhagen this December.
Environmentalists applauded the attention devoted by the National
People's Congress to environmental issues during its weeklong
session. Posted.

Little Movement From Chrysler On Electric Hybrids. As it moves
forward following its bankruptcy, Chrysler Group has made little
noise about when it intends to bring small or mid-size hybrid
electric vehicles to market. Last year, the automaker announced
plans to launch the first of its battery-powered ENVI models in
showrooms by the end of 2010. Posted.

The Cost of Adapting to Climate Change. The costs of adaptation
to climate change have been grossly underestimated, the authors
of a new study suggest. There is widespread agreement among
policymakers that cold, hard cash will be an essential element in
persuading nations vulnerable to climate change to sign up to a
global agreement in Copenhagen in December. Far less clear: how
much cash is needed to do the job. European ministers have
discussed sums up to about $140 billion to be paid each year by
more affluent countries to developing countries. Posted.

Indonesia Hints at 40% Emissions Reductions by 2030 - If
International Support is Forthcoming. Now we're talking! The
Financial Times has one of the most encouraging bits of climate
change news I've heard in a while. Indonesia, whose rapid
clearing of rainforests accounts for about one-quarter of all
carbon emissions from deforestation globally, has said that it
will pledge to cut its emissions by 40% from 2005 levels by 2030,
if it receives international support: Posted.
