Early in 2007, a coalition of big companies broke ranks with corporate America and declared that global warming was a real, grave threat. The United States Climate Action Partnership changed the national debate over warming. Executives from member companies such as DuPont, Ford Motor Co. and PG&E Corp. lobbied Congress to do something about greenhouse gases. Among her many accomplishments, Otana Jakpor, 15, has managed to break up the monotonous atmosphere of air-quality hearings. It's no easy task. Typically, environmentalists spout acronyms and percentages, while industry lobbyists predict the economy will collapse under new rules. Then the 5-foot-6 African American high school senior steps forward in defense of clean air. Posted. http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-otana26-2009aug26,0,742862,print.story Port Of L.A. Is Urged To Stop Lobbying Over Clean-Trucks Program. The port wants permission to regulate truckers as part of its effort to reduce air pollution. Trade groups object, saying that would make it easier for unions to organize the drivers. Several of the nation's biggest trade associations have fired a warning shot across the bow of the Port of Los Angeles, urging it to cease lobbying efforts to change a federal law that could greatly affect the way cargo is hauled into and out of the nation's seaports. State regulators are prepared to take serious measures to get California businesses to abide by new greenhouse gas restrictions. The California Air Resources Board is now considering how much to charge companies that emit greenhouses gases. Reports say businesses might also be charged, if they violate the new regulations and absorb the cost of complying with them. New York -- Most the world's top 100 companies report their estimated greenhouse gas emissions in one way or another, and at least two-thirds have specified emissions reduction targets. But reporting and targets vary wildly, and corporations actually prefer diversity in carbon reporting and reduction targeting rather than harmonizing the data as is done in many other business situations, a new study released yesterday finds. Climate change is expected by many scientists to cause catastrophic damage to forests and wildlife. Now, a new study raises questions about whether the very policies designed to stop warming temperatures could themselves harm plants and animals. Tens of millions of pristine acres will transform into energy-production centers with energy and climate legislation, according to the analysis from the Nature Conservancy appearing today in the journal PLoS One. Five U.S. senators with key roles in writing major global warming legislation will spend part of their August recess taking a climate tour of Alaska. U.S. Sens. Mark Begich (D-Alaska), Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) will visit retreating glaciers, insect-infested forests, drying wetlands, eroded shorelines and renewable energy projects in the state this weekend. Leader Says. Much of the fate of the U.N. climate treaty talks now rests in the U.S. Senate, according to a leading E.U. official, who says China would "lose its last reason" not to support an international pact if the United States passes a cap-and-trade bill. "I know for the American Senate it's absolutely crucial to know that China will sign the treaty," said Sweden's environment minister, Andreas Carlgren, whose country currently holds the European Union's rotating presidency. "I understand that. We fully support that. We have the same expectations." Posted. http://www.eenews.net/Greenwire/print/2009/08/26/3 NOAA, Coast Guard To Scout Alaska's Greenhouse Gas Emissions. A government lab is teaming with the Coast Guard to map out the natural greenhouse gas emissions rising out of Alaska. Using C-130 airplanes, researchers from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Earth System Research Laboratory will gather data on carbon dioxide and methane emissions over the next three years, which will be used to set benchmarks to track future changes in natural emissions. A recent audit of the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District gave the agency high marks for staffing efficiency and productivity, saying it scored better than other large air districts in the state. Posted. http://www.visaliatimesdelta.com/article/20090826/NEWS01/908260329 Let Air Permits Be Released. It’s a travesty that up to 2,000 businesses cannot expand and add jobs because the courts have ruled the regional air pollution agency can't issue them permits. That's right. As Southern California suffers through the worst recession in 70 years, after Congress unleashed more than $700 billion in stimulus money, businesses, public agencies and utilities have not been allowed to proceed with already approved projects because of an air pollution permit squabble. The nation's largest business group is asking U.S. EPA to hold a public debate on climate change science -- or face litigation -- as the agency prepares to regulate greenhouse gas emissions under the Clean Air Act. Despite a lack of precedent or applicable law, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce wants a hearing to make the EPA provide evidence that climate change endangers Americans. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, seeking to make monkeys of the legions of scientists who have suggested that climate change is a significant problem, wants to put them on trial. Charlie Thomas is worried that he may be forced to shut down his Satellite Beach, Fla., gas station in part because a state law requires all stations to install tanks to pump gas with at least 10% ethanol by year's end. A combination of environmental rules, mandatory equipment replacement, the down economy, increased competition from big-box stores and rising credit-card fees is putting the squeeze on independent gas station owners such as Thomas. "I don't know what the future is going to bring me," says Thomas, who has owned and operated his gas station and repair shop for 20 years. Some think that the only way to clean up coal is to stop burning it altogether. Now a handful of researchers and companies are pursuing a technology to do just that, but one that has the potential of keeping part of the nation's economy coal-fired. They are skipping the burning step. "Direct carbon" fuel cells efficiently produce electricity straight from the carbon source, which can be anything from coal to coconut shells. In 2007 the IPCC stated that developed economies must reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 80-95% by 2050 in order to avoid dangerous climate change. This report utilizes the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) dataset to analyze how the world’s largest companies currently set emissions reduction targets and whether planned reductions are sufficient to combat long term climate change. Norman, Okla.—Tropical lizards detect the effects of global warming in a climate where the smallest change makes a big difference, according to herpetologist Laurie Vitt, curator of reptiles and George Lynn Cross Research Professor at the University of Oklahoma’s Sam Noble Museum of Natural History. Climate change caused by global warming threatens the very existence of these and other tropical species, the ecosystem and its by-products, Vitt maintains. Tea Party conservatives are starting to target specifics with their protests and will take on ecologic business regulation Friday at the next major rally on the steps of the California Capitol in Sacramento. The Nevada County Tea Party Patriots are packing three buses with 168 people and expecting thousands more farmers, ranchers, loggers, miners and others to join them from across the state for the noon “March on Sacramento, Save California from Big Government Eco-regulation,” rally. The government's "Cash for Clunkers" program succeeded in getting people who were going to buy used to buy new cars instead, a study finds. But some of them may now regret it, says another survey. The number of car shoppers who said they decided to buy news cars instead of used ones changed dramatically between July, when it was 12%, to August, when it was 20%, Kelley Blue Book's Market Intelligence survey says.
