Every allowance offered in the auction sold at above the $13.57 floor price, according to California Air Resources Board results released Aug. 22. https://www.bna.com/california-auction-raises-n73014463455/ http://www.latimes.com/politics/la-pol-sac-cap-trade-auction-results-20170823-story.html http://www.latimes.com/politics/essential/la-pol-ca-essential-politics-updates-california-cap-and-1503427903-htmlstory.html http://www.sacbee.com/news/politics-government/capitol-alert/article168702607.html http://www.capradio.org/101013 Cap-and-trade vote sparks GOP revolt. California Republicans are having an identity crisis fueled by climate policy. The state's 25 Assembly Republicans are having a leadership election next week, motivated by current leader Chad Mayes' (R) support for the state's cap-and-trade program for greenhouse gases. Mayes led six other Assembly Republicans to cross the aisle last month in a vote… https://www.eenews.net/climatewire/2017/08/23/stories/1060059080 AIR POLLUTION Dutch activists in legal battle to urge action on pollution. Environmentalists went to court Wednesday to demand that the Dutch government take urgent action to improve air quality, arguing that authorities haven't done enough to meet European Union-mandated targets. The summary hearing in The Hague was part of a crowd-funded legal battle by the Dutch arm of Friends of the Earth… http://www.sfchronicle.com/news/science/article/Clearing-the-air-Dutch-activists-demand-action-11952073.php CLIMATE CHANGE Study concludes Exxon misled public on climate change. A study published Wednesday asserts that Exxon Mobil Corp. misled the public for years about what it knew regarding the science of climate change. The findings from a pair of Harvard University researchers add to charges from environmentalists, Democratic attorneys general and others that Exxon knew decades ago that its fossil fuels… http://thehill.com/policy/energy-environment/347622-study-concludes-exxon-mislead-public-on-climate-change http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/environment/sd-me-exxon-report-20170822-story.html Depleted climate staff 'in limbo' as agency reshuffles. Pastoralist women in Ethiopia participate in an activity on resource mapping. The State Department's climate team is operating on autopilot as it waits for a departmental reorganization that will likely lessen its clout. Staff rosters are shrinking at the agency's Office of Global Change and the Special Envoy for Climate Change (SECC) office… https://www.eenews.net/climatewire/2017/08/23/stories/1060059076 Warmer waters mean smaller fish — study. Fish will struggle to breathe as the ocean waters warm, researchers say, and bigger fish will have bigger problems. That means important species could soon top out well short of their current sizes — shrinking fisheries and potentially causing problems up the food chain. Scientists have created bacteria covered in tiny semiconductors that generate a potential fuel source from sunlight, carbon dioxide and water. The so-called "cyborg" bugs produce acetic acid, a chemical that can then be turned into fuel and plastic. And it is also a cause of more warming to come. The Arctic is warming about twice as fast as other parts of the planet, and even here in sub-Arctic Alaska the rate of warming is high. Sea ice and wildlife habitat are disappearing; higher sea levels threaten coastal native villages. But to the scientists from Woods Hole Research Center who have come here to study the effects of climate change… https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2017/08/23/climate/alaska-permafrost-thawing.html Don’t let Trump roll back California’s environmental gains. California has long been an environmental leader, adopting strong laws to protect the air, water and land that often, eventually, become national policy.
