AIR POLLUTION

Air quality officials urge people to avoid fireworks to limit air
pollution. Officials with the Bay Area Air Quality Management
District are asking San Francisco Bay Area residents to avoid
setting off their own fireworks this Fourth of July to limit air
pollution. The smoke, dust and soot from fireworks can trigger
asthma attacks, coughing, wheezing and eye irritation. People who
are sensitive to air pollution such as those with respiratory
conditions… http://www.ktvu.com/news/265346981-story

CLIMATE CHANGE

Rising temperatures could bump you from your flight. Thanks
climate change. Over three days in late June, American Airlines
canceled 57 regional flights out of Phoenix due to extreme heat
of 120 degrees Fahrenheit. More heat waves in the future could
mean flights get canceled, delayed or have to lose some weight.
That weight could be you. In the aviation business, really hot
days are called “weight restriction days,” because when it’s hot…

E.P.A. to Give Dissenters a Voice on Climate, No Matter the
Consensus. Scott Pruitt, the head of the Environmental Protection
Agency, plans to convene a team of researchers to test the
scientific premise of human-caused climate change, he told coal
industry executives on Thursday. Speaking at a board meeting of
the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity…

EPA chief pushing governmentwide effort to question climate
change science. The Trump administration is debating whether to
launch a governmentwide effort to question the science of climate
change, an effort that critics say is an attempt to undermine the
long-established consensus human activity is fueling the Earth’s
rising temperatures.

Obama Rues Loss of ‘American Leadership’ on Climate Change.
Former President Barack Obama on Saturday indirectly criticized
President Trump in a speech delivered in Indonesia for
withdrawing “American leadership” on climate change by abandoning
the Paris accord. “In Paris, we came together around the most
ambitious agreement in history about climate change…

G20 Summit: What To Expect From Talks On Climate Change After US’
Exit From Paris Agreement. All eyes will be on Hamburg where
President Donald Trump is set to attend the G20 summit on 7-8
July. The summit has gained significance since German Chancellor
Angela Merkel promised to make the Paris Agreement on climate
change a part of the key agenda.

The Navy showed Arnold Schwarzenegger how bad climate change will
be for its bases. Arnold Schwarzenegger and the US military have
at least one thing in common: they're both worried about climate
change. The actor and former Republican governor of California
recently visited Naval Station Norfolk, the largest naval base in
the world, to see how it's under threat from climate change.

UN chief: US may meet Paris climate goals despite exit. U.N.
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says the United States may
meet the Paris climate agreement's targets despite pulling out of
the deal. Guterres says Michael Bloomberg, a U.N. special envoy
on climate change, is "convinced" the U.S. will reach the Paris
goals. Guterres says that is because some U.S. states, cities and
businesses are committed to green energy.

Canada Report Touts Nat-Gas as Marine Fuel for Cost, Emissions
Reductions. A new report released by the Canadian Natural Gas
Vehicle Alliance (CNGVA) says major economic benefits and
emissions reductions can occur by expanding the use of natural
gas as a marine fuel on Canada’s Great Lakes and East Coast.

Court rejects Trump's delay of EPA drilling pollution rule. The

GREEN ENERGY

Latin America is going through an energy transformation, and it
could be a huge benefit to the U.S. From the northernmost point
in Mexico to the tip of Tierra del Fuego in Chile, Latin American
countries are experiencing an energy transformation. Some
countries are moving faster than others. Some are struggling with
long-running political battles that threaten development. The
issues may seem remote to energy consumers in the United States,
a country that, in the space of less than a decade, has
experienced what’s been called an “energy renaissance” in oil and
natural gas production…

MISCELLANEOUS

Counseled by Industry, Not Staff, E.P.A. Chief Is Off to a
Blazing Start. In the four months since he took office as the
Environmental Protection Agency’s administrator, Scott Pruitt has
moved to undo, delay or otherwise block more than 30
environmental rules, a regulatory rollback larger in scope than
any other over so short a time in the agency’s 47-year history,
according to experts in environmental law.

OPINIONS

Nuclear Power and Climate Change. To the Editor: Re “Glut of
Natural Gas Pressures Nuclear Power, and Climate Goals, Too”
(news article, June 14): Your article’s contention that premature
nuclear plant shutdowns will have “adverse consequences for
climate change” is exactly right. That’s because existing nuclear
plants provide a fifth of our energy in this country, and more
than 60 percent of our carbon-free electricity.

California may be leading on climate change, but that doesn’t
mean it can ignore local pollution. Last year California
lawmakers doubled down on the state’s landmark law to cut
greenhouse gas emissions. The passage of Senate Bill 32 obligated
the state to reduce emissions 40% below the 1990 level by 2030.
It is an ambitious target that has, again, made California one of
the world leaders in fighting climate change.

Opinion: Speak up to stop Trump plan to drill off California’s
coast. Breaching humpbacks, perky kingfishers, iridescent
dolphinfish and perpetually cute sea otters are just a few of the
34 species of marine mammals, 180 types of birds and over 500
fish species that call the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary
home.

Is it enough? In a June 22 Register article, the impact of
climate change on the wine industry is briefly addressed. During
a panel presented by the Wine Spectator, Harvard professor John
Holdren notes, “200 years of climate-change science leaves no
room for doubt that climate changes are due to emission of
heat-trapping gases from fossil-fuel burning and land-use
change.” (Note: heat–trapping gases aka greenhouse gases).

Four Green Technologies Growing Fast Enough To Achieve
Zero-Emissions World, IEA Says. Four green technologies are
growing fast enough to do their part in a zero-carbon-emissions
world by mid-century, an International Energy Agency official
said this week in Chicago. But they need a little help from other
technologies, said Eric Masenet, the head of IEA's Energy Demand
Technology Unit…

In The U.S., The South Will Pay The Most For Climate Change,
Study Finds. “If we continue on the current path, our analysis
indicates it may result in the largest transfer of wealth from
the poor to the rich in the country’s history.” As temperatures
rise in the coming decades, no part of the United States will pay
a bigger price than the South.
