CLIMATE CHANGE

A Sense of Duty to Teach Climate Change. Since my story about the
clash between teenage climate skeptics and their high school
science teacher ran earlier this month, several hundred teachers
across the country have responded with their own stories of
teaching on climate. After the initial flurry of replies, I
wanted to get a handle on a broader range of teacher experiences,
so I requested more stories.

Climate change, our biggest threat, can't be stopped at the
border. At Squaw Valley near Lake Tahoe last weekend, skiers were
half naked. Guys were going shirtless. Girls were in bikini tops.
Everybody was in shorts. Ski season in California has not ended
and may not completely stop before the snow starts falling again
in late autumn. Skiing with skin bared is not unprecedented.

Connelly: Gore trains activists as Trump blocks climate action.
Al Gore can trip over the words "Chelan" and "Wenatchee," but the
former vice president on Tuesday delivered a sure-footed,
compelling description of growing global catastrophe resulting
from extreme conditions accelerated by climate change.

Sunnyvale community group to focus on climate change. The
Sunnyvale City Council doubled down on fighting climate change
with a special order from Mayor Glenn Hendricks reaffirming the
city’s commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement as well as
approving the formation of a community group tasked with shaping
a new “climate action plan.”

Climate Change Is Not The Only Cause of Greenland Ice Melt. Blame
Sunnier Days. Greenland’s ice sheet is melting faster than
expected, and this has been accelerating over the past two
decades. It is now the biggest single contributor to global sea
level rise, accounting for 25 percent of the total. But besides
warming climes, there is another culprit for the melt: sunnier
days in fair Greenland.

As Trump ditches Paris, California leads on environment. Meeting
Xi Jinping in China, Governor Jerry Brown steps up as the global
face of progressive climate policy in the US. On June 6, Governor
Jerry Brown of California sat down in an elegantly decorated room
in the Great Hall of the People to meet with President Xi Jinping

Judge postpones briefs in legal fight over BLM rule. Citing
uncertainty around the fate of a slowly disappearing regulation
governing methane emissions from oil and gas operations on public
land, a federal judge yesterday extended briefing deadlines in
litigation launched last year to kill the rule. The U.S. District
Court for the District of Wyoming granted a request by the states
of Wyoming and Montana to delay briefing dates until the fall…

New, bigger incentives for electric cars could be ahead in
California. California could be poised to set up more generous
rebates and incentives for electric vehicle buyers — and not just
affluent drivers cruising in Teslas. Assemblyman Phil Ting, D-San
Francisco, is pushing a proposal to establish a $3 billion fund
to support the spread of electric vehicles with bigger rebates,
more programs for low-income buyers…

Wind power's big bet: turbines taller than skyscrapers. Wind farm
operators are betting on a new generation of colossal turbines,
which will dwarf many skyscrapers, as they seek to remain
profitable after European countries phase out subsidies that have
defined the green industry since the 1990s. The world's three

Climate change impacts Antarctic biodiversity habitat. Ice-free
areas of Antarctica - home to more than 99 per cent of the
continent's terrestrial plants and animals - could expand by more
than 17,000km2 by the end of this century, a study published
today in Nature reveals. Led by University of Queensland School
of Biological Sciences PhD student Jasmine Lee, the study is the
first to investigate how ice-free areas in Antarctica may be
affected by climate change.
