CAP AND TRADE

Appeals court to hear pivotal suit against cap and trade. A
lawsuit challenging the legality of California's economywide
cap-and-trade system for greenhouse gases is set for oral
arguments this week, but uncertainty over the future of the
program is likely to persist for some time. The 3rd District
Court of Appeal in Sacramento will hear an hour of arguments
tomorrow for and against California's authority to conduct

CLIMATE CHANGE

As Trump enters White House, California renews climate change
fight. 
California released new measures to fight climate change within
minutes of Donald Trump being sworn in as U.S. president on
Friday, signaling the state's commitment to be the nation's
environmental steward under an administration that has questioned
the reality of global warming.

On Trump's White House website, no more mention of climate
change.  Well, that was fast. Scientists, environmentalists and
other concerned citizens were quick to notice that there is no
longer any mention of climate change on the new White House
website. It’s a significant departure from how the site looked
Friday morning, when President Obama was still in charge. His
administration dedicated a page to the issue that began with the
following quote from the now-former president:

Fearing climate change databases may be threatened in Trump era,
UCLA scientists work to protect them. On a rainy Inauguration Day
morning, dozens of students, archivists, librarians, professors
and other concerned citizens gathered in a UCLA classroom, poring
over the Department of Energy website. They sifted through pages
covering a broad spectrum of topics, from energy-efficient
buildings and solar power to transportation and bioenergy.

Wisconsin's PSC also cut climate topics from site. In a shift
from the practice of two other state agencies, Wisconsin
emergency management officials have released new information on
climate change and its implications for the state. In a report
that it posted online last week, the state Division of Emergency
Management devoted extensive attention to climate change and how

CDC quietly cancels long-planned climate summit. The Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention quietly and abruptly canceled a
major climate change summit scheduled for next month shortly
after Donald Trump was elected president, according to emails
sent to those scheduled to speak and obtained by E&E News. The
Climate and Health Summit was scheduled to be held in Atlanta,
where the CDC is headquartered…

DROUGHT

Widespread flooding, mudslides, evacuations as biggest storm in
years batters California. The third in a series of powerful
winter storms unleashed a deluge in Southern California on
Sunday, flooding numerous roads and freeways, setting new
rainfall records and stranding some in dangerously rising waters.

OPEC Helps Cheap U.S. Oil Find Its Way to Group’s Top Customers.

China axes 103 coal-fired power plants, citing smog,
overcapacity. During negotiations for the Paris Climate Treaty
signed last fall, a major concern among critics was whether the
carbon emissions of China's sprawling and inefficient energy
sector could be reined in. With China, the U.S., and dozens of
other countries signing the agreement, the world's most populous
country committed itself to decarbonizing its growing energy
consumption.

Trump’s political teams land at EPA, DOE. President Trump's first
wave of political staffers are heading into federal agencies

Pruitt and Perry continue to play down climate change. President
Trump has tapped Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt (R) and
former Texas governor Rick Perry (R) to lead the agencies at the
forefront of the nation’s response to global warming. In their
nomination hearings last week, both men downplayed expert
warnings about the nature and extent of the crisis.

Legal, political clashes will settle future of California’s

The real climate hoax. Perhaps taking a page from the bad old
days of the petroleum-influenced George W. Bush administration,
Donald Trump's cabinet nominees aren't denying the science behind
climate change, they're just trying to cast doubt. Asked about
mankind's impact on global warming, they've collectively shrugged
their shoulders and waxed philosophically about the uncertainties
