Subject | Truck and Bus Regulation 2008 |
Comment | I am writing again to you knowing that this week the California Air Resources Board will be voting on the On-Road Heavy Duty Truck and Bus Rule. Such a rule is essential to reduce emissions and meet state and federal health-based air quality standards, to benefit public health, reduce global warming pollution and save lives. I am deeply concern about the negative health impacts of diesel pollution from trucks and buses and I urge you to adopt the strongest regulation possible to clean up the top sources of diesel particulate matter in California. It is shocking to know California has the worst air quality in the nation and that trucks and buses are a major contributor to the particulate matter and ozone pollution that causes serious health consequences. More distrubing is to know that pollution from trucks and buses result in an estimated 1,500 premature deaths and more than 38,000 asthma attacks annually. Equally important, truck drivers are 1.5 to 2 times as likely as workers not exposed to diesel exhaust to develop lung cancer during their lives. How will you be able to justify not protecting the health of all Californians if you do not adopt the strongest possible diesel truck regulations? Adopting the strongest regulations is the responible and right thing to do. Thank you. Ofelia Alvarado |
