Subject | increasing land use target for reducing CO2 emissions |
Comment | As a Professor of Environmental Studies, at the University of California, Santa Cruz, I know what a monumental threat global warming is to humans and the ecosystems on which we depend. California has taken a leadership role in addressing this threat by passing AB32, but we need to aim for more aggressive reductions in CO2 emissions in order to really make a difference in slowing the pace of global warming. One feasible way to do this is to make changes to how communities grow. I am writing to urge CARB to raise the land use target for AB 32 from 5 million metrics tons of CO2 to 11-14 (MMT). Analysis have showed that this is feasible by using dense, mixed-used development. It is important that California demonstrate that such standards are feasible, as many states and country are looking to California as a role model for global warming legislation. We have to be working on all fronts to slow CO2 emissions and one of the important pathways to do this is through development patterns. Thank you for raising the land use target. |
